Savinho injury update: Pep Guardiola raises concern

Defending English Premier League winners Manchester City face another setback as midfielder Savinho has faced a serious injury during the Carabao Cup loss to Tottenham Hotspur. This blow indicates that the Brazilian is out for several days now, meaning another addition to the already long list of first-team players out with injuries in the Pep Guardiola-coached side.

While making a pacy run into the penalty area during the round-of-16 game of the EFL Cup aka Carabao Cup, Savinho got his right ankle hurt during the second half. This time Manchester City were trailing by a goal in the 2-1 loss, a scoreline they failed to level in this game.

Following the injury, Savinho was seen in immense pain and was immediately stretched off out of the field in the 63rd minute. While leaving the field in tears, he was indicating the area that hurt. It was his right ankle with a serious blow. The player was seen pointing to his medial malleolus, which increases speculations of an injury there.

As per some assumptions, an avulsion fracture is a possibility, as the ligaments on the medial side are very strong, capable enough to rip off bone where they insert. Also, there’s a possibility of a high ankle sprain, causing serious damage to the deltoid ligaments.

As per ESPN, head coach Pep said that the club will be sure of the extent of the injury on Thursday.

How will Savinho injury impact Manchester City?

Manchester City, who are already out of the EFL Cup aka Carabao Cup now, are fighting to defend their EPL title and claim the UEFA Champions League title once again. But, now with Savinho’s injury things look tougher.

Savinho might not have been a regular in the side, but he had gained the trust of the coach lately. The side has a long list of first-team players injured: Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish, Kyle Walker, Jérémy Doku, and Oscar Bobb. Joining them now will be Savinho, who in all possibilities might even miss all games for the remainder of the year.

This is probably the worst injury situation since Pep’s arrival. He said (as per ESPN),  “We are in real difficulty but we have to make the effort. The guys who played, most finished with problems and we will see how they recover.

“I think when we are in trouble like we are — because in nine years, I’ve never in this situation had this many injuries for this many reasons.”

His club is currently leading the Premier League table, but with so many first-team players out, defending the title will be tough. Manchester City will face AFC Bournemouth in the next league tie.
