Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace Preview

  • Tournament: Premier League
  • Date: Saturday, November 23, 2024
  • Time: 3:00 pm GMT
  • Venue: Villa Park

Aston Villa will host Crystal Palace on their return to Premier League action after the international break. It is an important game for both sides at Villa Park as they find themselves on different parts of the table.

Villa are currently ninth in the table after 11 games with five wins, three draws, and three defeats. With the table being so tight, though, they are just one point behind third-placed Chelsea. Hence, Unai Emery will be keen to get his team back to form and compete higher up in the table.

Crystal Palace, meanwhile, had a horrid start to the 2023-24 campaign. They were without a win in their first eight matches before beating Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 at Selhurst Park. They then drew one and lost one of their Premier League fixtures after that. The Eagles sit 18th in the table, one point away from safety.

Incidentally, Crystal Palace recently beat Aston Villa in the EFL Cup Round of 16 at Villa Park and will take confidence from that performance on Saturday.

Key Players to watch in Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace

Ollie Watkins

Ollie Watkins

Ollie Watkins has struggled for consistency this season with Aston Villa. He’s scored five goals and provided three assists in 15 games across competitions but they have come in patches.

In fact, Watkins has scored just one goal in his last eight appearances for Villa. He hasn’t scored in his last five appearances for the club. He did, however, score for England in their 3-0 win over Greece during the international break.

Hence, Watkins will be keen to take confidence from that and add to his tally at the club level on Saturday.

Jean-Philippe Mateta

Just like Ollie Watkins, Jean-Philippe Mateta has also scored five goals this season, along with providing one assist in 14 games across competitions. He was in stellar form under Oliver Glasner last season but just like Crystal Palace, he’s struggled as well.

With the likes of Eberechi Eze injured, Mateta will have to bear more responsibility of leading the attack against Aston Villa. He has scored just one goal in his nine appearances across competitions and will be keen to get on the scoresheet on Saturday.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace Prediction

While Aston Villa have struggled for consistency this season, Crystal Palace have struggled for any sort of form.

Villa sit just one point off third place but are without a win in their last five games across competitions, including four straight defeats. They drew against Bournemouth before losing against Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur, Club Brugge, and Liverpool. With fixtures coming thick and fast now, Unai Emery will be desperate to stop this downfall.

Palace, meanwhile, received a major boost when they beat Tottenham at home to register their first Premier League win. They then beat Villa in the EFL Cup Round of 16 in their next match before drawing against Wolves and losing against Fulham.

The Eagles have shown some fight in recent games but have a lot of key players missing like Eze and Kamada. Hence, Villa are likely to take all three points, which will be crucial for them.

Predicted Score: Aston Villa 2-1 Crystal Palace
