Liberia vs Togo Preview

  • Tournament: AFCON Qualifiers.
  • Date: Wednesday, November 13.
  • Time: 5:00 PM GMT.
  • Venue: Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex.

Liberia vs Togo will be the fifth match for both teams in Group E of the AFCON Qualifiers as the third-placed side will host the fourth-placed side in a seemingly dead-rubber match.

The hosts will enter this contest on the back of a poor run of form in recent times. After winning against Sao Tome and Principe (1-0) in June, Liberia are winless in four games across two international breaks in September and October. With three defeats and one draw to their name in that span, Liberia will look to snap out of it with a good result. The last break brought two defeats to Equatorial Guinea and the hosts will look to avenge those results.

Togo, on the other hand, have experienced a very similar run of form to their next opponents, albeit slightly better. They drew two games in September, followed by suffering two defeats in October. However, they had a third game in October against Benin and secured a 2-0 win in another Qualifiers match. They will look to carry the confidence from that win into their next matchup against Liberia.

With that said, let’s take a look at the team news coming out of both camps.

Liberia National Football Team News

Manager Mario Marinica fielded a strong lineup in his team’s last two games in the last international break. However, despite their best efforts, Liberia fell to two defeats. While the negative is undoubtedly the result, the positive news is that Marinica will have no injuries or suspensions to deal with in the next match.

Togo National Football Team News

Manager Dare Nibombe fielded a strong lineup as Togo held their own fairly well despite falling 1-0 to a formidable opponent in Nigeria in their last AFCON Qualifier match. Much like their rivals, Togo have no injuries to report either, meaning they will have every player fit and available for their next match. They performed well in the last match and will look to replicate that performance.

Key Players to Watch

William Gibson (Liberia)

Forward William Gibson has been Liberia’s main player so far in the AFCON Qualifiers. Despite the team’s lowly start to the campaign, Gibson has contributed with two goals so far in the four games his team has played. While the team sits bottom of the group, Gibson’s teammates will hope he comes up with a clutch performance for them.

Thibault Klidje (Togo)

The Togolese forward has contributed with one goal so far for his nation in the AFCON Qualifiers. With several other players also contributing to the same, Klidje will be under pressure to deliver, but since he is the starting striker, there will be decent amount of burden of expectations on his shoulders that he will look to fulfil.

Liberia vs Togo Prediction

Going by the recent results between the two teams, a draw seems like the likeliest outcome since it has been the outcome in two of the last three matchups. Togo has been the only team to secure a win and it was back in 2015 in a home game. Now, with Liberia at home this time around, they will look to go for their first-ever win against Togo as well.

Prediction: Liberia 2-1 Togo
