Aston Villa 2-0 Bologna: Player Ratings as McGinn and Duran Secure Comfortable Victory

In a clash of two of the surprise participants of the Champions League this season, Aston Villa hosted Bologna and beat them 2-0, in quite a comfortable fashion. In the process, Villa made it 3/3 wins in the competition and rose to the top of the table.

It was two second half goals which did the deed for the English side. Captain John McGinn scored a direct freekick from an odd angle to open the scoring. Jhon Duran then continued his superb form with a goal in what was a rare start.

Bologna have work to do now having lost crucial players and their manager after they helped the club qualify for the Champions League.

Goalkeeper

E. Martinez — 7/10. It’s the big games that bring the best out of the big Argentine keeper. Tonight was no exception as he was on point against everything the Italians threw at him.

Defenders

E. Konsa — 6/10. Slowly beginning to get more familiar with the RB position. Solid in entirety although maybe too safe with the ball.

D. Carlos — 7/10. The Brazilian was on top of everything Bologna had for him. A real dominant CB performance from him.

P. Torres — 6/10. Not the greatest outing for the Spanish defender. Shaky in duels but very good in possession as usual.

Ian Maatsen – 8/10. Was a livewire on the left wing, always looking to run at the defence and cause something. His best game in a Villa shirt.

Midfielders

A. Onana – 6/10. Did not have the chance to do all that much in possession. However he was excellent in duels as usual.

Y. Tielemans – 7/10. Continued his excellent start to the season as Villa’s main creative hub. Was once again very important with the ball.

L. Bailey – 5/10. Arguably Villa’s weakest link so far this season. Another poor performance, where he lost the most duels in the game.

Morgan Rogers – 8/10. A terrifying presence in the attacking midfielder position. Completed the most dribbles and won the most duels. Also assisted and created a bunch of chances.

J. McGinn – 8/10. Scored a direct freekick from an absurd angle to open the scoring. A real captain’s performance from the Scottish midfielder.

Forwards

J. Duran — 8/10. Finally a start for the big Colombian and he delivers again. It has been a terrific start to the season and he scored again today.

Substitutes

R. Barkley – 6/10. The experienced midfielder came on in the second half and picked up a booking. Didn’t do much else.

J. Ramsey – Came on with half an hour to spare and didn’t have the chance to do much else.

J. Philogene – Came on with half an hour to spare and didn’t have the chance to do much else.

O. Watkins – Came on with half an hour to spare and didn’t have the chance to do much else.

B. Kamara – N.A. Finally a much awaited return from injury.

Manager

U. Emery – 8/10. Just your usual cup competition masterclass from Unai Emery. Thanks to him, believe it or not, Premier League’s club Aston Villa are top of the Champions League standings after tonight’s games.

Goalkeeper

L. Skorupski – 6/10. Did just fine in terms of shot stopping. Could have communicated better for McGinn’s freekick though.

Defenders

C. Lykogiannis – 7/10. He was absolutely everywhere for Bologna be it in attack or defence. Gave a torrid time to Bailey.

J. Lucumi – 5/10. One of his weaker performances. Got beaten by Duran way too easily for the second goal.

S. Beukema – 7/10. The Bologna skipper was one of their better players as a whole. Should have scored however only managed to hit the woodwork from a big chance.

S. Posch – 7/10. A good performance from the Austrian fullback. Created a couple of chances and got forward well.

Midfielders

G. Fabbian – 6/10. The young midfielder barely got to do much on the ball. However, he won 4/4 when it came to ground duels.

R. Freuler – 6/10. The experienced Swiss international saw a lot of the ball in deeper areas. However, he was a little too easily bypassed in midfield.

K. Urbanski – 5/10. An underwhelming performance from him. Did not effect the game much at all.

Forwards

D. Ndoye – 7/10. Bologna’s best performer on the night, especially in attack. Kept going at his fullback all game and created a lot of danger.

T. Dallinga – 5/10. The Dutch striker struggled a lot in this game. He had a couple of sizeable chances and failed to score.

R. Orsolini – 6/10. Very silent and almost invisible during this game. Couldn’t do anything and subbed off at half time.

Substitutes

J. Odgaard – 6/10. Came on at half time for Orsolini but was he much better? Not really, fairly ineffective as well.

S. Castro – 5/10. Came on with half an hour to spare and didn’t have the chance to do much else.

R. Moro – 5/10. Came on with half an hour to spare and didn’t have the chance to do much else.

S. Iling-Junior – 5/10. The Villa loanee couldn’t do much versus his parent club.

Manager

V. Italiano – 6/10. Replacing Thiago Motta hasn’t been going to plan. Bologna again didn’t really look like winning today.
