Brighton 2-1 Manchester City Player Ratings: Pedro inspires stunning comeback win against Cityzens

Manchester City’s woes get extended after Brighton & Hove Albion came from behind to beat them 2-1 in a Premier League game. City were off to the best possible start after Erling Haaland scored a brilliant goal. The Norwegian outran Brighton’s defenders before unleashing his effort, which was initially saved by incoming Bart Verbruggen, but he pounced on the rebound.

City were the better side until half time but the complexion of the game changed after the break. Brighton came as a rejuvenated side, constantly putting the Cityzens on the backfoot with their swift moves. Super-sub Joao Pedro capitalised on City’s lacklustre defending and netted home the equaliser past Ederson in the 78th minute. Not long after, Matt O’Riley, another substitute, finished off Pedro’s ball to put the game to bed.

Man City could have easily capitalised on the lead, but they were instead punished for their complacency. The defeat marked their fourth in a row across all competitions, City’s worst-ever run since 2006 – which is quite alarming. Nevertheless, it was only their second loss in the Premier League this season and are only two points behind leaders Liverpool, who will face Aston Villa tonight.

Goalkeeper

Bart Verbruggen: 7/10 Verbruggen was unfortunate to concede Haaland’s goal as he still made a big chunk of his body in the way. Also stopped Savinho’s strike with a close-range save and denied Haaland at the near-post.

Defenders

Pervis Estupinan: 7/10 – Despite struggling against Savinho initially, Estupinan grew into a dangerous player as the game wore on. Defensively solid and made some threatening progressive passes. Whipped in a brilliant cross to Hinshelwood, whose header was saved.

Igor: 6/10 Despite being beaten by Haaland for the goal, Igor proved to be a colossus in the defence throughout the game. Made a stunning last-ditch clearance against Haaland’s pass with Savinho in behind.

Jan Paul van Hecke: 7/10 Van Hecke put in a sublime performance though he was overwhelmed by Haaland for the goal. The Dutchman was spotless with his passing and watchful when it comes to defending. Blocked Gundogan’s near-post effort and delivered an amazing long ball to Pedro, who made a mess of his effort. Also produced a similar delivery in the build-up to the equaliser

Joel Veltman: 6/10 – Veltman was a solid presence in the defence, getting involved in 7 defensive actions and winning 3 duels.

Midfielders

Jack Hinshelwood: 5/10 – Had his leaping header off Estupinan’s cross thwarted by City keeper Ederson. Limped off with an injury in the second half

Yasin Ayari: 4/10 – Lost the possession in the middle of the pitch that led to a City turnover, with Kovacic eventually setting up Haaland. Ayari was hauled off at half-time.

Simon Adingra: 5/10 – Adingra became more lively after the break and when he started to become threatening, Hurzeler took him off around the hour mark.

Karou Mitoma: 6/10 – The Japanese winger became vibrant in the second half and proved to be a dangerous outlet on the left flank.

Attackers

Georginio Rutter: 5/10 – Rutter relentlessly pressed off the ball in an attempt to unsettle City defenders. Had a limited impact in the final third.

Danny Welbeck: 6/10 – Had his shot blocked by a diving Josko Gvardiol inside the penalty box. Also curled his free kick a whisker wide of the post in the first half. But became a much-improved player in the second half

Substitutes

Carlos Baleba: 7/10 – A terrific performance that will go under the radar. One of the reasons for the game to swing in Brighton’s way as he was immense both on and off the ball.

Matt O’Riley: 6/10 – Made an instant impact by scoring the winner. Showed more calmness and ruthlessness when blasting his shot past Ederson.

Joao Pedro: 7/10 – A man-of-the-match performance off the bench. Made amends for his glorious miss from close range by scoring the equaliser and setting up the winner. Proved to be a nightmare to City players with his short time on the pitch.

Brajan Guda: N/A

Jakub Moder: N/A

Manager

Fabian Hurzeler: 7/10 – A massive result for the young German manager, who becomes the latest tactician to get the better of Guardiola. The Seagulls became a recharged unit in the second half, amping up their intensity and firing in all cylinders. Hurzeler’s substitutes also bore fruit as both Pedro and O’Riley scored goals.

Goalkeeper

Ederson: 5/10 – Displayed a stunning reflex to repel Hinshelwood’s header in the second half, but was let down by his own defenders for the two goals.

Defenders

Rico Lewis: 5/10 – Lewis was one of the busiest players on the pitch while he was on course to cap off a great outing, some poor defending towards the end tarnished his performance.

Josko Gvardiol: 5/10 – The Croatian had a great first-half whether it was his progression or defenders but became one of the guilty parties when Brighton turned the game on its head. Was lethargic and caught napping for Brighton’s goals. Directed his header wide of the post in injury time.

Jahmai Simpson-Pusey: 5/10 – The young centre-back had a decent evening until Brighton dismantled City’s defence towards the end. He was of no help when the Sky Blues conceded two goals.

Kyle Walker: 6/10 – Finished the game as the second-highest passer with an accuracy of over 90%. Also created 1 big chance and delivered 10 balls into the final third. Defensively, he made 5 recoveries

Midfielders

Mateo Kovacic: 7/10 – Had a terrific game for larger spells, pulling the strings from the midfield. Provided an imperious pass to Savinho early in the game and also won the ball in the midfield before setting up Haaland with a precise ball. However, the Croatian’s performance declined towards the latter stages.

Ilkay Gundogan: 5/10 – Showed occasional threat by dropping deep and occupying spaces between the lines but didn’t have a major impact

Matheus Nunes: 5/10 A- gain deployed as a left-sided winger but to little effect.

Phil Foden: 5/10 – Looked dangerous in the first half with his brilliant play between the lines but failed the impact the game on the whole

Attackers

Savinho: 6/10 – Savinho once again was City’s biggest attacking threat down the right-hand side as his dribbling prowess unbalanced Brighton. Missed a glorious opportunity from close range courtesy of a huge save by Verbruggen.

Erling Haaland: 7/10 – A great performance which will be overshadowed by the damaging result. Powered his way past Van Hecke and Igor to score a brilliant goal. The Norwegian also showcased his brilliant hold-up play when stranded up front, bringing fellow attackers into play.

Substitutes

Bernardo Silva: N/A

Kevin De Bruyne: N/A

Manager

Pep Guardiola: 4/10 – Guardiola has himself to blame after failing to capitalise on the lead for the second game in a row. City’s complacency after the break was blatant, allowing Brighton to overwhelm them. It’s a worrying sign as City’s ability to dominate larger spells of the game is withering away.
