Chelsea continue their rise in the Premier League with a thumping win over Aston Villa. The Blues had very little trouble from the away side today as they dominated from start to end.
Nicolas Jackson scored early in the game to hand them the lead before Enzo Fernandez scored to make it 2-0 before half-time. Cole Palmer scored the final goal of the match late in the second half to seal all three points.
Chelsea player ratings vs Aston Villa
Robert Sanchez – 7: Excellent save to deny Ollie Watkins when it was 1-0. Decent performance overall but still a little shaky at the back.
Defender
Moises Caicedo – 8.5: Started as the right-back today and was playing as a midfielder more often than not. Never put a foot wrong and showed why he is worth every penny.
Wesley Foanan – 8: Apart from that one moment with Watkins, he was brilliant and even made a last-ditch tackle inside the box to prevent the Villa striker.
Levi Colwill – 8: Marked Morgan Rogers the whole time he was on the pitch and things ticking at the back. Never looked better on the ball as he made space for himself.
Marc Cucurella – 8.5: Another match, another brilliant performance. The Spaniard is proving to be one of the best defenders in the world.
Midfielders
Enzo Fernandez – 9: The Argentine scored a brilliant goal and controlled the match throughout. Kept pushing forward and looked like he was enjoying his game again.
Romeo Lavia – 7.5: Few tackles were kist too rash and it seemed like he was trying too hard to impress. Nonetheless, another impressive display after his injury.
Cole Palmer – 9.5: Nothing but great today. Kept his calm on the ball, dropped deeper to create chances and then topped it off with a brilliant goal.
Pedro Neto – 8: Kept driving into the box and made Digne look like a school kid making his debut today.
Jadon Sancho – 8: Should have won a penalty but he stayed on his feet and the referee did not bother to call the foul. Decent match and he is showing why he could turn out to be a £25 million steal.
Forwards
Nicolas Jackson – 9: The striker is once again proving why Chelsea invested in him and did not buy another player in the summer. He scored early and could have had a hattrick as well.
Substitutes
Benoît Badiashile – 7
Noni Madueke – 5
Christopher Nkunku – 6
Malo Gusto – 6
João Félix – 5
Manager
Enzo Maresca – 10: Spot on with the starting XI, tactics and also the substitutions. There was nothing more he could do today.
Aston Villa player ratings vs Chelsea
Emiliano Martinez – 5: Creator of his own problems today but there was little he could do about the goals. He was taken off at halftime because of an injury.
Defenders
Matty Cash – 4.5: He had no answer for Jadon Sancho and Enzo Fernandez. Never looked comfortable on the ball too.
Ezri Konsa – 5.5: Decent compared to the others but never looked like was going to make things hard for the Chelsea players.
Pau Torres – 5: Foolishness almost cost Aston Villa but that was his only highlight of the match. Never looked like he was going to cause trouble to the Chelsea forwards.
Lucas Digne – 4: A performance he would love to forget even before he gets off the pitch. Neto made him look like a debutant who was nervy from start to finish.
Luke Thomas – 6.5: Pick of the defenders today as he was doing a lot of things right. He was Leicester’s best player for a large part of the game.
Midfielders
Boubacar Kamara – 6: The midfielder was lucky not to get booked in the game. Nowhere near the action otherwise.
Youri Tielemans – 6: Decent game apart from the sloppy moment when he had the ball stolen off him. Still one of the better Villa players today.
Jaden Philogene-Bidace – 5.5: Never got into the game and the only moment any Villa fan will remember seeing him on the ball is his dive into the box, for which he got booked.
Morgan Rogers – 4: Levi Colwill was on his toes all the time and that made it hard for him to get involved in the game. Managed just 10 passes in the 66 minutes and had to be taken off.
John McGinn – 7: The best player for Aston Villa as he kept pushing for a goal from the start to the very end. However, he got no help.
Forwards
Ollie Watkins – 5: Had the best chance of the match for Aston Villa and had he scored, things could have been a lot different today.
Substitutes
Robin Olsen – 7
Ross Barkley – 6.5
Leon Bailey – 6
Jhon Durán – 6
Emiliano Buendía – 5
Manager
Unai Emery – 7: The manager did all he could but Chelsea were just a step ahead at everything.
