Chelsea 2-1 Newcastle United: Player ratings as Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer strike to give Blues a regular win

Chelsea overcame Newcastle United 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday. The Blue’s striker Cole Palmer netted minutes into the second half after Alexander Isak had equalized for the Magpies in the first half after Nicolas Jackson’s early effort for the Blues. Eddie Howe’s side weathered a late storm to keep the scoreline minimal. The sides meet again on Wednesday for the round of 16 in the EFL Cup. Here are the player ratings for both sides:

Goalkeeper

Robert Sanchez – 6.5

Was rarely threatened but should’ve done better for Isak’s goal.

Defenders

Malo Gusto – 7

Played a key role in winning back possession and tormented the Magpies going forward with his directness, pace and crosses.

Wesley Fofana – 7.5

With four clearances and two blocks, Fofana was certainly reading the game well, and demonstrated his aerial prowess too.

Levi Cowill – 7

Held the fort well by combining physicality and positional awareness.

Reece James – 7

Laid five crosses in the game to emerge as a big threat to the Magpies upfront.

Midfielders

Moises Caicedo – 7.5

Made four interceptions and two tackles as the Ecuadorian was a thorn in Newcastle’s flesh.

Romeo Lavia – 7

Brilliantly supplied Palmer for their second goal.

Forwards

Noni Madueke – 6.5

Made a few good crosses but was eclipsed by better players around him.

Cole Palmer – 8

Back on the scoresheet for the first time since his four-goal salvo against Brighton, and how the Chelsea fans absolutely loved it!

Pedro Neto – 8.5

The creative inspiration for the Blues today with four crosses and three key passes, while also testing Newcastle with his directness.

Nicolas Jackson – 8

Netted for the second league game in a row, firing Chelsea in front after 18 minutes into the kick-off.

Substitutes

Mykhaylo Mudryk – 4

Was a complete non-factor for the time that he was on the pitch for.

Enzo Fernandez – 4

Was a spectator for much of the game.

Manager

Enzo Maresca – 6.5

Would be relieved to see his side win, although it should’ve been a much bigger one.

Nick Pope – 6.5

Made four saves in the game but was beaten twice too.

Defenders

Valentino Livramento – 6.5

Threw his weight around in defense but Chelsea’s quality was ultimately too much.

Fabian Schar – 6

Was involved in the thick of the things but didn’t make any genuine impact.

Dan Burn – 6.5

Made four clearances and completed over 90% of his passes.

Lewis Hall – 8

A revelation on the left flank for the Magpies, laid four key passes, five crosses and bagged the assist for Isak too.

Midfielders

Was ineffective for much of the game and was ultimately taken off after the hour mark.

Bruno Guimaraes – 6.5

Demonstrated his imperious ball-winning capabilities, although going forward he didn’t really yield anything meaningful.

Joelinton – 6.5

Uncharacteristically poor today, lacking any sort of flair in his game.

Forwards

Miguel Almiron – 5.5

The Paraguayan offered no great shakes in offense, cutting a lonely figure upfront for most of the time without proper service.

Alexander Isak – 7.5

Came within a chance in the 32nd minute and buried it to bring Newcastle level.

Harvey Barnes – 6.5

Showed the willingness to contribute but lacked the quality to really trouble Chelsea.

Nothing much to see besides a few passes.

Not enough time to make an impact.

William Osula – N/A

Came alongside Kelly in the closing stages to see the game off.
