A calamitous defensive performance saw Man City throw away a 3-0 lead in the disappointing 3-3 draw against Feyenoord in the Champions League group stage game. City dominated the proceeding from the get-go, pushing the visitors further back into the defence while enjoying a flurry of opportunities up front. Erling Haaland provided the breakthrough just before half-time after winning a penalty and converting it from the spot. The game soon turned into an onslaught after Ilkay Gundogan doubled the lead with a deflected strike before Haaland produced a finish off Matheus Nunes’ cross.
While a victory looked to be on the cards for Pep Guardiola’s side, their defensive lapses started to creep in, eventually turning the game on its head. Anis Hadj-Moussa pulled back one for Feyenoord in the 75th minute after capitalising on Josko Gvardiol’s back pass and another nervy defending from the hosts led to Santiago Gimenez’s strike. The last straw was when Ederson’s effort to rush off the pitch backfired, with David Hancko scoring the equaliser from the resulting mistake in the 89th minute. The draw extended Man City’s miserable winless run to six games in all competitions.
Manchester City Player Ratings vs Feyenoord
Goalkeeper
Ederson: 3/10 – A terrible display from the Brazilian, playing a hand in the disappointing draw. Was caught at the near post ahead of Gimenez’s strike and his decision to come off the box completely backfired in the lead-up to the equaliser.
Defenders
Josko Gvardiol: 4/10 – The Croatian endured a nightmare evening with an awful defensive display, being solely culpable for the last two goals. Tried to play a backpass unnecessarily for Feyenoord’s second and failed to deal with a cross ahead of the equaliser.
Nathan Ake: 6/10 – Looked solid for larger spells with incredible defending, using his physicality to greater effect
Manuel Akanji: 5/10 – The Swiss defender was impressive for most of the game until he was rattled towards the end.
Rico Lewis: 6/10 – An industrious display from the right-back, who moved to the middle to facilitate build-up and progression, also showed great ball-winning abilities. Played more progressive passes into the final third.
Midfielders
Ilkay Gudogan: 7/10 – Sprayed some top-quality progressive passes and produced a strong shot which took a deflection off Hancko before rolling into the nets.
Matheus Nunes: 7/10 – His best performance in the Man City shirt this season, which would boost his morale moving forward. Proved to be a big threat in the middle and on the right-hand side with his great foot word and bursts of pace. Stepped on the gas to leave Feyenoord defenders behind his trail before whipping a stunning low-cross to set up Haaland
Bernardo Silva: 6/10 – One of City’s busiest players yet again, trying to pull the strings from the right-hand side but a killer pass was missing.
Attackers
Phil Foden: 6/10 – Created all kinds of threats in between the lines and linked up well with Nunes. Made a great turn and delivered a powerful strike but was palmed away by Wellenreuther.
Erling Haaland: 8/10 – A majestic performance from the Norwegian centre-forward which will be overshadowed by the result. Won the penalty and buried home from the spot for his 1st and made a darting run into the box to slide home for his double.
Jack Grealish: 6/10 – His ball-carrying was impressive and he had a shot hit the frame of the goal in the dying minutes.
Substitutes
Kevin De Bruyne: N/A – couldn’t conjure any sort of magic in the final stages
James McAtee: N/A
Jahmai Simpson Pusey: N/A
Manager
Pep Guardiola: 4/10 – The Spanish gaffer’s nightmare run continues with yet another abject defensive performance. Squandering a 3-0 lead against a relatively weaker opponent highlights their unprecedented crisis and they haven’t learnt from their mistakes in the previous games.

Goalkeeper
Timon Wellenreuther: 5/10 – An excellent first-half performance marred by Haaland’s penalty goal. Produced top-quality saves against Foden and Haaland as well as great sweeping abilities. Couldn’t do much against the goals in the second half but looked sharp in many instances.
Defenders
Gijs Smal: 6/10 – Played an excellent progressive pass leading to an early chance and made a great block against Foden.
David Hancko: 6/10 – A loophole in the defence, with Gundogan’s goal taking a huge deflection off him. He was also caught out by Nunes’ pace for City’s third goal. However, he enjoyed an upturn in his fortunes after heading home the equaliser towards the end.
Gernot Trauner: 7/10 – One of the bright spots in an otherwise vulnerable defence, thwarting a lot of efforts from the rampant Man City attack. Made sure the scoreboard didn’t get worse for the visitors.
Bart Nieuwkoop: 6/10 – Won a couple of duels with Haaland in the first half and dealt with the threat of Grealish down the right flank.
Midfielders
Quinten Timber: 5/10 – The skipper disrupted Feyenoord’s plans after conceding a penalty towards the end of the first half by clipping Haaland with a high boot as well as handing Man City the momentum
Antoni Milambo: 4/10 – Had a limited impact before getting hauled off around the hour mark
In-Beom Hwang: 6/10 – Played a brilliant through-ball to Paixao to create a glorious opportunity but only to be squandered by the forward.
Attackers
Anis Hadj Moussa: 7/10 – Created occasional threat down the right-hand side with his impressive ball-carrying abilities and scored an impressive goal in the first half, pouncing on Gvardiol’s loose back-pass and going around Ederson before releasing his strike
Igor Paixao: 7/10 – Spurned a great chance with a weak shot after being played through on goal by Hwang. But he seized his opportunity after setting up Hancko’s equaliser.
Julian Carranza: 4/10 – Made a minimal impact after City defenders marked him completely out of the game.
Substitutes
Jordan Lotomba: 5/10: His shot hit the inside of the post before finding Gimenez, who poked it home.
Santiago Gimenez: 5/10 – The Mexican made an immediate impact by tapping home an easy finish
Thomas Beelan: N/A
Ramiz Zerrouki: N/A
Facundo Gonzalez: N/A
Manager
Brian Priske: 7/10 – Priske deserves credit for Feyenoord’s fighting mentality despite the odds against them. The Dutch side had their tails up once a crack emerged in City’s defence and built on their momentum to complete the turnaround.
