Newcastle United vs Chelsea Player Ratings: Isak Shines in Attack as Newcastle Defeats The Blues

Newcastle United’s high press did the trick for the Magpies as they beat Chelsea’s second-string side in the Carabao Cup. The home side scored two quickfire goals in the first half to seal the win over the side they lost to in the Premier League over the weekend.

Enzo Maresca made 11 changes to his side once again and it did not work out for him today. Newcastle United squad went in with most of their first team players and that helped them get the goal from Isak early. An own goal from Disadi saw the away side fall behind 2-0 and they never managed to recover.

Newcastle United player ratings vs Chelsea:

Nick Pope – 8: Had to make 4 saves today but was threatened more by the corners than the shots. He did almost everything right today and did not let Chelsea back in the game.

Defenders:

Emil Krafth – 7: Mudryk kept troubling him but he came out on top most of the time. He never put a foot wrong and was ready to throw himself to block shots.

Fabian Schär – 7.5: Solid at the back and never gave Nkunku a chance to attack the space. Always ensured that the Frenchman was marked and did not give him enough chances.

Lloyd Kelly – 7: Threw himself to block a shot from Nkunku and could not have done more today. Did not look out of position and has shown why they signed him this summer.

Lewis Hall – 7: The former Chelsea man showed why he is rated highly. Was always on the toes of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and never gave the Chelsea man a chance to do well in the game,.

Midfielders:

Sean Longstaff – 6: Probably the weakest in the Newcastle United side today. Got booked early and was easily getting beaten by Cucurella and Enzo.

Sandro Tonali – 8: Brilliant from start to the moment he left the pitch. Never looked out of place and kept pressing the Chelsea midfielders to regain the ball high up the pitch.

Joelinton – 8: Not his best game but still a solid outing from the Brazilian. Kept going until the end of the match and was ready to break away from his own half at every chance.

Forwards:

Anthony Gordon – 7: Lucky to have not get sent off and also give away a penalty in the second half. Was a live wire on the pitch and kept the Chelsea defenders on their toes.

Alexander Isak – 8: Scored the opening goal and kept making things difficult for the Chelsea defenders. He was on top of his game and could have easily scored more.

Joe Willock – 5.5: Could have and should have scored a goal today but just not enough in the final third.

Substitutions:

Bruno Guimarães – 6

William Osula – 6

Valentino Livramento – 6

Dan Burn – 6

Lewis Miley – 6

Manager:

Eddie Howe – 8

Filip Jørgensen – 7: Nervy game for the goalkeeper but did nothing to show that he should be replacing Robert Sanchez as the #1. His passing was iffy and but the saves were decent.

Axel Disasi – 5: Poor is an understatement and it should be the final time the Frenchman plays as a right-back for Chelsea. He was lazy, sloppy and did not do anything right for the Blues.

Tosin Adarabioyo – 6: Decent performance compared to those around him but not enough. Nothing much he could do about both goals today.

Benoît Badiashile – 5: His poor pass put pressure on Renato Veiga and led to the first goal. Was poor overall and almost gave away a 3rd goal in the first half with a terrible touch.

Marc Cucurella – 7: The long bright spark in the Chelsea defense today. He was brilliant on the ball and always available to receive it in the midfield or left flank when needed.

Midfielders:

Renato Veiga – 7: Got pressed for the first goal and should have done a lot better. Iffy passing all around and just could not do a lot right tonight.

Enzo Fernández – 7: Similar to Renato Veiga today as passing was just not up to the mark. The Chelsea captain could not ping the ball over the Newcastle United defense.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall – 5: With every game, Chelsea fans will question why they signed Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. The midfielder played as a right-winger today and hardly got anything right.

Forwards:

João Félix – 4: Just kept shooting and shooting but never managed to threaten Nick Pope. His shots were either off target, saved easily or blocked.

Mykhaylo Mudryk – 7: Kept trying to bring his side back in the game but did not get the support he needed from the others in attack.

Christopher Nkunku – 4: Missed all his chances when he could have easily got a hat-trick today. Never threatened Pope and was nowhere close to what Nicolas Jackson does for the Blues up front.

Substitutions:

Noni Madueke – 6

Manager:

Enzo Maresca – 7
