The weekend starts with an action bonanza this Saturday as the fixture was supposed to see the Magpies hosting the Cherries in the St. James Park for the first game in the weekend-long fixtures. Both of the clubs are in form in the Premier League and as the table stands, both of them are now fighting for the Champions League qualifying spots.
Since their last fixture in August last year, the men in black and white face Bournemouth for the first time. Their last face-off saw the score 1-1 in the Vitality stadium. The Magpies had a great momentum after beating Wolves comfortably in a 3-0 score Wednesday. They were supposed to set a new club record in terms of consistent wins. It as all Anthony Gordon and Isak show in their last fixture. Even the club legend Shearer had mentioned that the Magpies can be in the title discussion as they now have a proper system.
On the other side of the pitch, things are clicking for the Cherries as well. After their comfortable 5-1 victory in the FA Cup, they have successfully kept the Blue at bay with a 2-2 score line in the last Premier League fixture. As per the records, the Cherries have not won the single time in their last 4 meetups with the Cherries. But when it comes to early kick-off, the Cherries have the upper hand strategically.
While both of the team wanted a secured win against each other in the Newcastle vs Bournemouth match, anything goes in the 90 minutes. And Semenyo proved just that by making the play and Kluivert finishing off for an early first goal for the Cherries. The Magpies struggled to shake off the press of Bournemouth in the early minutes.
There was a reason why Guimaraes was being tackled all over the pitch. As soon as he had some space in the box, he converted a corner taken by Hall, making the score 1-1. In the 43rd minute, Bournemouth got their lead back again as Kluivert had his second.
The first half ended with a lot of drama as a fight broke out between Joelinton and Kluivert. Both of them were booked. However, along with them, Adams was booked too.
As the game was resumed, The Cherries were relentless and they doubled up their lead with Outtara scoring the header. But unfortunately, the goal was canceled. At the end minutes of second half, Bournemouth doubled up on the lead finally. Guess who scored? Yes, it’s Kluivert! What a player! It was his second hat trick in the season. The cherry on top came as Kerkez scored the 4th for the Cherries. The full time saw a 1-4 victory for the visitors.
It was a one man show indeed and Justine Kluivert surely has made his father Patrick Kluivert, who is the now the head coach of Indonesian National Team proud!
Newcastle player ratings against Bournemouth
Goalkeeper
Dubravka (5/10)
Tried his best with full stretch to save the shot of Kluivert but it was perfectly placed. Was also left compromised for the second goal for Bournemouth. But the third one was an easy save for the keeper but he failed to get a touch. He had a relief knowing the goal was canceled. But his job was not finished. He saved his team from conceding another in the 69th minute.
Defenders
Livramento (4.5/10)
Left a huge gap with Botman that led to an open space for the Cherries which allowed the quick goal. Looked visibly disappointed. Made some good recoveries to deny the 2nd goal for Bournemouth.
Botman (4.5/10)
The defender had seen better days as he was nowhere near his levels in the first half. He got subbed off in the beginning of second half.
Burn (5/10)
Had a better presence in the defensive line today than his compatriots.
Hall (6/10)
The busy left back of the match assisted the equalizer for Newcastle. Got subbed off as Trippier was introduced.
Midfielders
Guimaraes (6.5/10)
A quality midfielder indeed. Made the plays throughout the match. Scored the much-needed equalizer in the 25th minute with a header. Gave away the ball that allowed the Cherries the 2nd goal.
Tonali (5.5/10)
Held the ball well from time to time. However, the Italian was having a bad day while going forward. As per his bar, he had better games. However, he showed great character with his defensive side.
Joelinton (5.5/10)
Played the perfect part in the Newcastle midfield today along with Tonali and Guimaraes. In the later minutes of first half, he had more control in the game. Got booked in the end of first half.
Forwards
Murphy(5/10)
Due to the Bournemouth pressure, the winger barely got much time coming from the flanks in the first half.
Isak (6.5/10)
Dropped deep to help out the team to connect the dots in the midfield after Newcastle conceded an early goal. Shows his hunger for more.
Gordon (6/10)
Dropped deep to help out the team get back momentum. Looked great going forward but had a few miss passes. Stroke a thunderous volley but it did not see the net.
Substitutes
Schar (4/10)
Came in the beginning of the second half as a replacement for Botman.
Trippier (4/10)
Came in the 64th minute for the Magpies. Looked lively as soon as he came.
Willock (4/10)
Came along with Trippier for the Magpies after they got saved from the 3rd goal shenanigans of Bournemouth.
Osula (4/10)
Came in the 90th minute for Guimaraes.
Manager
Howe (4/10)
Safe to say he wanted way more character from his team in the fixture.
Bournemouth player ratings against Newcastle
Goalkeeper
Kepa (5/10)
The keeper did not see much of the ball until the equalizer from Bruno. He had his hand on the incoming header but it was just not enough.
Defenders
Cook (5/10)
Had an average game by the first half. Showed drive while going forward and made some great overlapping runs.
Zabarnyi (5.5/10)
Had a good command in the defence today that didn’t allow a goal from open play in the first half.
Hujisen (5/10)
The youngster has been a great asset for the Cherries. He is proving up to be the best partner for Zabarnyi. Saved a great volley from Gordon. He saved another in the goal line in the late minutes of second half.
Kerkez (6/10)
The engine for the Cherries. Was very good going forward and went past the Newcastle players coming in quite a lot of time. He was great with his defensive duties too. He made it 1-4 and the left back deserved it very much.
Midfielders
Adams (5.5/10)
Perhaps made the most challenges for the Cherries. While they were not glamorous, they sure were tactical. Looked confused as to why he was booked during the fight.
Christie (6/10)
A busy player for the Cherries this evening. He made multiple box to box runs for his team. Got booked for a reckless challenge in the 69th minute.
Semenyo (6/10)
Build up the play that opened up the game in the 5th minute for the Cherries. Helped getting the early lead for his team.
Brooks (5.5/10)
Perhaps the silent one in the Bournemouth midfield today. However, played a crucial part in the build-up and pressing. Got subbed off in 80th minute.
Kluivert (6/10)
He has been phenomenal lately. Almost in every build-up for the Cherries, he is involved. This time, he finished it with a 5-minute goal. Scored the second goal at the edge of first half for his team. Got booked due to the fight with Joelinton. He was on fire today and his third goal from long-range summed up his evening. What a thunderous strike!
Forwards
Outtara (5.5/10)
Made great runs off the ball but quite didn’t happen for the Bournemouth forward. The connection was missing for the lone-striker. Came deep to build up with his midfielders and almost scored the second goal from an attack that he started. He finally got his chance to score a goal after the second half started and a brawl broke out in the Newcastle box. However, his goal was canceled. He got booked in the 76th minute.
Substitutes
Jebbison (4/10)
Came in for Brooks in 80th minute. He could have made it 1-4 but was denied by the Newcastle goalkeeper.
Winterburn (4/10)
Came in the 96th minute of the game.
Rees-Dottin (4/10)
Came in after Cherries scored the 4th goal.
Manager
Iraola (5/10)
Seemed to be the happiest manager between the two. But he hoped for better performance from his team.
