Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico Madrid Player Ratings: Both teams share spoils in the Madrid Derby as the La Liga title race heats up

A goal in either half, penalty from Julian Alvarez and goal from Kylian Mbappe, isn’t enough to separate the two Madrid sides, with Real and Atletico forced to share the spoils of a 1-1 draw in LaLiga for the second time this season. The gap between both sides is currently just one point with Real Madrid standing at the top with 50 points.

Atletico Madrid expectedly ceded possession to their opponents and looked to hit on the counter, but most of the play occurred in midfield, with Real Madrid unable to break down their opponents outside of a pair of off-target shots from distance.

Simeone’s side were not much better in front of goal but looked to have a bit more guile through De Paul and Alvarez and were building momentum ahead of the all-important penalty decision – with Lino brought down by Tchouameni during an attempt to get on the end of Galan’s cross. Julian Alvarez’s ice-cold panenka gave the visitors a lead in his first derby at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid did not take too long to score the equalizer in the second half, thanks to Mbappe who latched on to the loose ball to hammer it into the back of the net after Bellingham’s shot on target. The hosts maintained the intensity, attacking continuously at regular intervals. Atletico Madrid made a triple substitution to counter this, yet the hosts continued to dominate. The visitors did well to defend and block out the attacks and capitalized on the failure of Real Madrid’s inability to take charge of that momentum.

Asencio: 7/10 – Replacing the injured Rudiger, the young centreback did not look out of place at all, winning duels and recovering balls comfortably.

Tchouameni: 6.5/10 – Despite a tight call from the referee, he committed a foul leading to a penalty for Atletico Madrid.

F. Garcia: 6/10 – While he looked comfortable getting forward and joining the attack, his defending left us wanting for more.

Ceballos: 7/10 – Despite getting a yellow card in the first half, his passing game alongside tackling was spot on.

Valverde: 7/10 – His work-rate was impeccable and his versatility helped the manager to try new things late in the second half.

Bellingham: 7/10 – He was involved in attacks as usual and despite hitting the woodwork once, his finishing was off tonight.

Vinicius Jr: 6/10 – A relatively quiet game for a player of his standards, as he neither took shots nor created chances.

Mbappe: 7.5/10 – He was a menace with his rapid pace and dribbling. He had a thumping shot to equalise and pull his team back in the derby.

Rodrygo: 7/10 – He was the brightest attacker of the night, showing flair, creating chances and he did a fine job to beat the full-back and cross the ball for the equalising goal.

Galan: 6.5/10 – A tightly contested one vs one battle against Rodrygo, which he struggled on occasion and got a booking because of it too.

Alvarez: 7/10 – He sent a confident penalty, a Panenka over Courtois at the Bernabéu right down the middle to open the account of the match.
