Tottenham 1-2 Ipswich Town Player Ratings as the visitors record their first win of the season at White Hart Lane

In what was quite possibly a write-off by most fans tuning in this weekend, Ipswich Town pulled off a historic upset to beat Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane. Despite their difficult start to the season, the newly-promoted side fought hard to record their first win of the season away to Tottenham, who did not resemble a side in contention for making the top 4 this season.

Following a dreadful performance in midweek against Galatasaray, Spurs’ performances continued to dwindle after they conceded twice within the first half to a side that was rooted to the bottom of the Premier League coming into the game. Despite a lot of huffing and puffing, the Lilywhites failed to create anything substantial or mount a comeback in the second half of the game.

All in all, the game was very watchable, apart from the Tottenham faithful. Despite going ahead, Ipswich Town did not rest on their laurels nor did they fall back into their own box to see out the lead. Whilst Spurs had a right go at trying to draw level, they were time and again denied by Ipswich’s resilience and a lack of cutting edge from their own players.

Goalkeeper

Guglielmo Vicario: 6/10- Was rather unlucky on both occasions as his defense did not do him any favors. Did well to command his box and deal with any other dangers whilst making good use of the ball to launch any counterattacks.

Defenders

Destiny Udogie: 7/10- Got better as the game went on and did well to get up and down his flank. Had his job made a little easier without an out-and-out attacker on his side, and made the most of it to try and push forward.

Radu Drăguşin: 5/10- Very poor and clumsy in dealing with the ball coming into the box and showed little awareness or willingness to deal with incoming danger. Was at times erratic with the ball at his feet and surrendered possession unnecessarily.

Cristian Romero: 6/10- Did not have a good game and was far from his usual ever-present and aggressive self at the heart of the defense. Wasn’t particularly superb with his passing today either.

Pedro Porro: 6/10- Had a lapse in judgment for the first goal aside from which Porro had an alright game, all things considered. Did well to venture forward and tried to find his teammates with his crosses, notching an assist as well.

Midfielders

Pape Matar Sarr: 7/10- Very active throughout covering every blade of grass. Was slightly unlucky to pick up repetitive knocks, which ultimately saw him taken off midway through the first half.

Rodrigo Bentancur: 7/10- Showed little urgency and imagination with his passing and really only began playing like his usual self at the start of the second half. That said, he was much more creative and popped up with a much-needed goal from a corner as well.

Dejan Kulusevski: 6/10- Was slightly poor considering his performances in recent weeks and seeing that he was the chief creator today, who largely went under the radar. Tried to play a few intricate passes with Solanke, which ultimately didn’t amount to anything.

Attackers

Heung-min Son: 7/10- Ran himself ragged trying to create something or nick a goal himself. Would quite easily have come up with something on a different day, but grew frustrated by the end, opting to take potshots from distance instead of playing in a teammate.

Dominic Solanke: 7/10- Active and dangerous throughout, making some good runs into the box and finding himself in promising areas. Was rather unlucky to have struck his own hand for his disallowed goal.

Brennan Johnson: 6/10- A poor outing from the Welsh forward who was in blazing hot form only a couple of weeks ago. Missed a bit of a sitter at the start of the game which would have helped set the tone in favor of his side.

Substitutes

Timo Werner: 7/10- Made a lively impact when he came on, delivering some good crosses and even had a go at goal from a long distance. A difference maker and injected some much-needed pace yet still had the same lack of ability in front of the goal.

James Maddison: 6/10- Put in to try and nick an equalizer at the death but was unable to come up with the goods today. Could have benefited from having more minutes to work his magic and possibly get something for his team.

Yves Bissouma: N/A

Manager

Ange Postecoglou: 6/10 – Set his side up well and was rather unlucky to be behind owing to mistakes from his own personnel. Regardless, the introduction of Maddison slightly earlier could have benefitted the side.

Goalkeeper

Arijanet Murić: 8/10 – Dealt with any dangers coming into the box with relative ease and was up to anything else that the Spurs attacker threw at him. Other than a few risky misplaced passes, Muric was mostly on top of things today.

Defenders

Leif Davis: 7/10- The more attacking out of what was essentially a back 5 at times, Davis did well to get his team upfield and find one of his attackers in a good position. Was not too hassled defensively either.

Cameron Burgess: 6/10- Slightly clunky at times but got the job today. Did well to hold off any and all threats before thumping any danger as far as possible from his box.

Dara O’Shea: 6/10- Much like Burgess, O’Shea did well to repel any Spurs’ chances and dealt well with the plethora of crosses coming into the box.

Axel Tuanzebe: 5.5/10- Slightly uncomfortable and often easily outdone by a Spurs attacker, Tuanzebe did well to hold his nerve toward the end of the game and help retain his team’s precious lead.

Midfielders

Jens Cajuste: 6/10- Had a rather quiet performance filling in for Kalvin Phillips, but did well to get the ball out to his attackers as soon as possible. Made a nice cross which ultimately resulted in a goal, but was quite easily bypassed in midfield.

Sam Morsy: 6/10- Put in a solid shift leading his side to a big win. Always showed up for the ball and got stuck in defensively as well.

Omari Hutchinson: 8/10- Started off on the left flank before making his way into the #10 role where he became more involved and the clear focal point of the Ipswich attack. Slightly better decision-making and composure would have easily yielded a goal or an assist.

Attackers

Sammie Szmodics: 7/10- Did well to move up and down the left flank, getting stuck back in as much as he ventured forward. Not only that, but his acrobatic overhead kick was the tone-setter for a historic win for his side.

Ben Johnson: 6/10- Was played much higher than he usually does and fulfilled his duties as well as possible. Could have done better in some instances offensively but seeing that it is not part of his natural game, he gets a pass this time around.

Liam Delap: 7/10- Was strong and active throughout, utilizing his shrewd game sense, getting his team further up the pitch, and doing well to pounce on a loose ball in the box. Delap was also key in the second half, posing a real physical challenge to the Spurs center-backs and being a nuisance for them throughout.

Substitutes

George Hirst: N/A

Jack Clarke: N/A

Massimo Luongo: N/A

Manager

Kieran McKenna: 8/10- An absolute masterclass in tactics and man management that saw his side record a big win. Did well to keep his players encouraged throughout and gave them the belief that could come away with something at the home of one of the league’s top sides.
