Wolves 1-2 Manchester City: Player ratings as John Stones wins it at the death for misfiring Sky Blues

Manchester City beat Wolves 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday, fighting off an early deficit. The hosts stunned the defending champions in the seventh minute with some brilliant work down the right that resulted in Jorgen Larsen firing them in front with a clinical effort. In the 33rd minute, the Sky Blues equalized for the home side through Josko Gvardiol.

With Erling Haaland effectively taken out of the game, City looked toothless for the most part, and were struggling to find the elusive winner despite their best efforts. However, in the fifth minute of added time, John Stones came off the bench and headed in a brilliant corner from fellow substitute Phil Foden to break Wolves’ hearts. Here are the player ratings:

Had to remain on his toes for much of the time and made some really important saves.

Defenders

Santiago Bueno – 7

With five clearances and two blocks, he made a big impact in defense.

Craig Dawson – 7

Good sense of positional awareness saw him make a staggering nine clearances, as Dawson gave City’s stellar forwards a serious run for their money.

Toti Gomes – 7

Worked nicely in tandem with his defensive cohorts to prevent Haaland from having much space to work into.

Midfielders

Nelson Semedo – 7.5

Set up Larsen for the opener and remained a threat for City with his attacking menace.

Joao Gomes – 7

Plucked the ball off City players with his prolific ball-winning capabilities and often impeded Wolves’ movements with his perfectly-timed tackles.

Andre – 7

Made four clearances, one block and two tackles to play a vital role defensively, but left a lot to be desired going forward.

Mario Lemina – 7

Fought valiantly for possession and came up trumps on most occasions.

Rayan Nouri – 7.5

Showed exemplary work-ethic, biting at the heels of City players for the ball, and always looking to spoil their plans with vital interventions.

Forwards

Jorgen Larsen – 8

Fired the wolves in front with a clinical strike after only seven minutes into the kick-off.

Matheus Cunha – 6

Rarely saw the ball and made just one effort all evening, that was also off-target.

Substitutes

Tommy Doyle – 7

Threw his weight around in defense.

Carlos Borges – 5

Struggled to get involved and was on the fringes most of the time.

Goncalo Guedes – 5

Was sent in to inject some attacking flair but was completely powerless.

Came on for the last few minutes to see some gametime under his belt.

Set up his side to frustrate their mighty visitors and nearly eked out a point too.

Goalkeeper

Ederson – 5

Didn’t face much threat in goal from the Wolves but was unable to keep out Larsen’s effort.

Defenders

Rico Lewis – 6.5

Passed the ball around well and looked to get his side forward with a handful of long balls.

John Stones – 9

Solid in defense as Stones ensured everything is kosher at the back; his aerial prowess saw him win six of his nine duels but more importantly, struck the winner for City deep in stoppage-time.

Ruben Dias – 7

Circulated the ball around well and demonstrated his aerial ability too.

Josko Gvardiol – 8

Made over 100 passes, created some solid scoring opportunities and struck the equalizer himself in the 33rd minute.

Midfielders

Mateo Kovacic – 7

Sloppy in possession but had an eye for pass; created a few good chances too.

His propensity to dribble caused a lot of problems to Wolves, while also feeding the attackers with a series of crosses, 13 in total.

Ilkay Gundogan – 7.5

City’s prodigal son was once again important in opening up the Wolves defense and set the cat among the pigeons with his crosses.

Bernardo Silva – 7

The Portuguese star linked up brilliantly with his cohorts, but couldn’t pose a direct challenge to Wolves.

Jeremy Doku – 8.5

Won 10 ground duels and looked absolutely menacing upfront, twisting and turning the Wolves defense inside out with his passing and movements; also bagged the assist for Gvardiol’s strike.

Not often that you see him so quiet. In fact, he didn’t muster a single shot in the match.
