Girona vs Sevilla Match Preview

Tournament – La Liga

Date – Monday, January 22

Kick-off Time – 01:30 am IST

Venue – Montilivi Stadium

Two teams come into the game on the back of contrasting 2023-24 campaigns so far. While Girona have established themselves as surprise La Liga title contenders, Sevilla are engaged in the relegation battle.

Girona have lost just once in 20 league games this season, winning 15 and drawing four. They sit atop the standings, a point above Real Madrid, who have a game in hand.

Meanwhile, Sevilla are just a point above the relegation zone with three wins, 10 defeats, and seven draws in the league this season.

Both sides won their respective Copa del Rey Round of 16 clashes this week though, and hence, will be in a confident spell coming into the game.

Girona vs Sevilla Team News

Girona will miss David Lopez and Toni Villa due to their respective injuries. They will also be without their star midfielder Aleix Garcia as he is serving a three-match ban after his red card in their draw against Almeria.

Sevilla, meanwhile, will have some significant misses for the clash. Youssef En-Nesyri is on international duty with Morocco at AFCON. Meanwhile, Boubakary Soumare is suspended after receiving five yellow cards.

Sevilla are also without Dodi Lukebakio and Nemanja Gudelj due to injuries. Marcos Acuna and Erik Lamela could potentially make a return to the squad.

Prediction

Girona have surprised everyone with their exploits this season. They have played some excellent football under Michel. They haven’t lost a game across competitions since their 3-0 defeat against Real Madrid back in September.

Sevilla, meanwhile, have been on the other end of the spectrum. While they have won their last two Copa del Rey matches, they’ve lost all three of their previous La Liga games.

Moreover, with Sevilla missing some key players, Girona are the favorites to come out on top on Monday.

Predicted Score: Girona 3-0 Sevilla

Girona vs Sevilla Players to Watch Out For

Girona

For Girona, all eyes would be on Artem Dovbyk, who hasn’t scored since their 1-1 draw against Real Betis back on December 22 last year. He did provide an assist in their thrilling 4-3 win over Atletico Madrid but the Ukrainian striker will be keen to add to his tally against Sevilla.

Dovbyk is Girona’s top scorer this season with 11 goals.

Sevilla

For Sevilla, the key player could be Ivan Rakitic. The Croatia international has provided just two assists this season but has an xA of 4.1. While he isn’t the most forward-thinking player, Rakitic runs Sevilla’s midfield.

Moreover, with Girona missing their mainstay Aleix Garcia, Rakitic will look to dominate the midfield and help Sevilla get a result.
