Jamie Carragher criticizes Liverpool’s transfer strategies, praises Jurgen Klopp

Premier League giants Liverpool have been silent so far this transfer window. In fact, they are the only club in the English top division to not sign a player yet in the transfer window. The club were in full mood to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, but unfortunately the 25-year-old rejected the Reds.

Tactical genius Jurgen Klopp left the club after a successful nine years and Arne Slot has been appointed in his chair. The club has also made Richard Hughes the new sporting director, while his predecessor Michael Edwards is now the new chief executive. In short, it’s the start of a new era at Anfield.

The new regime however hasn’t started well off-field, with their first prime target avoiding the deal. Club legend Jamie Carragher, who spent 17 long years at Liverpool, criticized the management’s failure to lure players. The former defender said that the failure is not a “great look” for the club.

He shared his views on the deal saying that Zubimendi is a sitting midfielder, but not the type Klopp would be looking for. He also added that Liverpool have been very good at securing deals for selling players at good prices, but not getting the first transfer in reflects that the “optics are not great”.

He further explained the importance of the move saying that Liverpool have been desperate to strengthen the position, firstly trying but failing to sign  Aurelien Tchouameni, then Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia. Now they have lost Martin Zubimendi too.

He praised ex-boss Klopp for his role in securing big deals, saying managers have a big role in convincing players. However, Jamie Carragher made it clear in the interview with Skybet that he is not criticizing new coach Arne Slot. But, he felt that Klopp’s personality would have helped Liverpool convince Zubimendi for a deal.
