Jeremy Doku caught Alexis Mac Allister’s chest with a high boot in the dying minutes of Liverpool vs Man City. However, the referee and VAR claimed that it was not a foul by the Belgian star and denied the shouts from the home side.
Replays showed that Doku had gotten to the ball just before catching the Liverpool star on the chest. Moreover, the officials believed that the Manchester City star was in a reasonable position to go for it.
Peter Dury, who was on commentary from Anfield, had access to the communication between the referee and the VAR officials. He suggested that officials were in agreement that the Manchester City star was not endangering his opponent and said:
“Word from the VAR, Doku played it in a reasonable position.”
Liverpool vs Man City: Jurgen Klopp furious at penalty decision
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was not happy with the call from Michael Oliver and confronted the referee in the middle of the pitch after the final whistle. He also spoke about the decision in his post-match interview and claimed that it was a 100% foul by the Manchester City star.
The German manager added that it would have been a straightforward call anywhere else on the pitch. He said:
“You agree that this situation in all other positions in the pitch is 100% a foul and a yellow card.”
The draw leaves Arsenal at the top of the table, level on points with Liverpool in 2nd place. Manchester City are now playing catch-up, and they set a point behind the league leaders.
