New rule stops Manchester United and Liverpool faceoff in Carabao Cup

With the Carabao Cup draw set to take place on Wednesday night, Manchester United and Liverpool are set to be apart because of a new rule.

With the first set of Carabao matches ongoing this week, the draw for the next set of teams in Europe is set to take place.

The huge reveal of why Premier League giants Manchester United and Liverpool cannot face off is set to be revealed.

On Tuesday night Everton, Crystal Palace, Leicester City Brighton, and Hove Albion played out their matches, while Newcastle United, West Ham United, and Nottingham Forest are all set for a Wednesday night clash.

After all the matches are completed on Wednesday, the rest of the Premier League sides will enter the third-round draw.

Ahead of the draw, as per a new rule, teams from the Champions League should not face those from the Europa League.

What is the new rule in the Carabao Cup?

According to reports from Manchester Evening News, the Carabao Cup third round will take place across two midweeks due to an extended European group stage affecting the calendar. This means no Champions League (Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa) side will face a Europa League(Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur) team.

The Champions League teams are set to play on September 17/18, while sides like Man Utd and Spurs will start their third-round fixtures.

In the following week, things will be reversed with Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Aston Villa playing their third-round matches with United and Spurs in Europa League action.

Erik Ten Hag’s first campaign saw United lift the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United

Last campaign, Liverpool were crowned champions in Jurgen Klopp’s last season after Virgil van Dijk sealed the 1-0 victory over Chelsea.
