Alvaro Morata Injury Update: Atletico Madrid striker set to miss key fixtures!

Alvaro Morata limped off the pitch with an injury in the 45th minute in Atletico’s defeat to Sevilla in LaLiga last weekend. Here is an injury update on the Spanish forward.

Spain’s star forward suffered a harrowing injury to his knee in Atletico’s defeat to Sevilla on matchday 24 in LaLiga. Morata entered a 50-50 duel with Sevilla’s midfielder Boubakary Soumaré to win a ball in no man’s land. Morata was caught by Boubakary as he tried to escape the incoming midfielder’s challenge. The striker suffered a serious blow to his knee and was barely able to limp off the pitch. Medical tests revealed that Morata had sprained the internal lateral ligament in his right knee and suffered a bone contusion. 

This season, Alvaro Morata has scored 13 goals in LaLiga and is the joint-top goalscorer in the Champions League. His 5 goals in 6 matches in the UCL helped Atletico secure top spot in their group.

Alvaro Morata Injury Update: When will the striker return?

Atletico’s top goalscorer this season, Alvaro Morata injury will hamper the Spanish club amidst a very tough schedule. Los Colchoneros are set to visit Italy to face Inter Milan in a UEFA Champions League (UCL) Round of 16 fixture next week. They will be traveling to Bilbao to face Athletic Club in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final at the end of the month. Currently, Atletico trail 1-0 to Ernesto Valverde’s Bilbao after losing at home in the first leg of the tie. Atletico will also host Las Palmas this weekend in LaLiga.

The duo of Antoine Griezmann and Morata have been crucial to Atletico’s successful campaign till now and with the Frenchman looking drained out and Morata injured, the season could end as a failure for the club. 

However, Atletico will not raise the white flag to surrender just yet. Sources from inside the club have provided an important injury update on Alvaro Morata. After scans, reports suggest that Morata’s injury isn’t as serious as first thought. The La Liga club hasn’t confirmed his exact return date yet, but Alvaro isn’t expected to miss more than 3 weeks. The evolution of his injury will decide his return. For now, Atletico fans can take a deep breath and continue to hope for the best.
