Antoine Griezmann injury update- When Will He Return for Atletico Madrid?

Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann sustained an injury on Tuesday, dealing head coach Diego Simeone fresh concerns. The Frenchman went off with a niggle in the 78th minute of their first-leg Champions League tie with Inter Milan, although reports suggest it’s not too serious.

The club put out a statement saying it’s a “moderate ankle sprain”, but is confirmed to miss their weekend’s La Liga clash with Almeria. He is also doubtful for the second leg of Atletico’s Copa Del Rey encounter with Athletic Bilbao, next Thursday.

Griezmann, however, is expected to return for the second leg against Inter Milan on 13 March. Trailing 1-0 in the tie, the Rojiblancos need their star man in the squad to help overturn the deficit. Simeone’s team are looking to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2022.

Since returning to Atletico following his failed spell at Barcelona, Griezmann has slowly recaptured his mojo. The 2023-24 season has been the best of his second term in Madrid, bagging 18 goals from 36 appearances. He’s also chipped in with seven assists.

Griezmann’s Absence Puts Spotlight on Deadly Attacking Duo

Together with the in-form Alvaro Morata, the pair have forged a deadly attacking combination this season. But without Griezmann for the next few days, the responsibility of producing the goods falls on Morata. The Frenchman’s absence is also a bane for Memphis Depay, who could start their Almeria clash on Saturday, having been primarily used off the bench by Simeone.
