Garnacho made his international debut for the side last year
Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho could end up playing both the Copa America and the Olympics this summer. The forward has been called up to Argentina’s squad for the USA showpiece, whereas their U-20 head coach Javier Mascherano wants him for the Paris games too.
The 19-year-old had a good campaign with United even as the club struggled collectively. He netted 10 goals in all competitions for the Red Devils, including one in their FA Cup final win over Manchester City, while also chipping in with four assists.
Understandably, he is wanted by both, Argentina’s senior team as well as the U-20 team. While Garnacho’s participation in the Copa America is likely, it’s his availability for the 2024 Paris Olympics that’s still under question.
According to TNT Sports, Mascherano has made a formal request with Manchester United to release him for the Olympics too, but he is yet to hear back from the club. Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez is another player that the former Barcelona star is keen to call up for the games.
Garnacho risks fatigue with Copa America and Olympics participation
Alejandro Garnacho has only wrapped up a long and hectic season with Manchester United, and will soon be seen in Argentina’s colors at the Copa America as the Albiceleste look to defend their crown. If that wasn’t enough, participating at the Olympics will only serve to add to his fatigue, and he won’t have time to recover ahead of the 2024-25 season as United are likely to kick-off their Premier League campaign on 13 August.
