Argentina Players Fear for Families’ Safety Ahead of Copa America Final

Argentina Fears for Concerns Over Security Lapses in Copa America

As Argentina prepares to face Colombia in the Copa America final concerns over family safety have overshadowed the excitement.

Argentina’s coach Lionel Scaloni and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez have voiced fears of a repeat of the security lapses seen during Uruguay’s semifinal against Colombia. Scaloni stated,

“My family is going to be there, the family of every player is going to be there. We can’t be worrying.”

These worries come after a brawl erupted in the stands near Uruguayan players’ families with no security in sight. Players had to step in to protect their loved ones, including mothers with infants.

“The images were very sad,” Scaloni said backing Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa’s criticism of the tournament’s organization.

Criticism of Tournament Organization

The 2024 Copa America in the United States has faced criticism for its organization since it began.

Temporary grass fields and poor pitch conditions have been a constant complaint.

“The fields were in poor condition,” Martínez noted echoing Scaloni’s sentiment. Both criticized the lack of security amateur officiating and high ticket prices.

The most alarming issue was the security failure during the Uruguay-Colombia semifinal. Videos of players protecting their families from aggressive fans went viral highlighting the urgent need for better security.

Martínez recalled a similar incident in Brazil emphasizing the importance of separating fans to avoid violence.

With these concerns looming Scaloni and Martínez hope for a safe and enjoyable final.

“Everyone in that position would have reacted in the same way,” Scaloni said reflecting on the Uruguayan players’ actions. As the final approaches, the focus remains on ensuring a secure environment for all.
