Sardar Azmoun Injury: AS Roma striker suffers ‘serious’ injury during international duty with Iran

AS Roma striker Sardar Azmoun has reportedly suffered a ‘serious’ hamstring injury whilst on international duty with Iran national football team. The incident occurred during Iran’s comfortable 5-0 win over Turkmenistan in the AFC World Cup qualifiers on March 21.

Sardar Azmoun Injury: Extent & probable return date

Azmoun started and even scored in the win against Turkmenistan. However, the forward pulled up with discomfort just before half-time. He was eventually replaced by Omid Noorafkan in the 46th minute, with the player unable to even walk comfortably.

Speaking to a reporter after the match, Sardar Azmoun’s update did not sound too optimistic.

“My injury is serious, I need to get an MRI, but I’m sure it’s a hamstring tendon tear.”

The striker is on loan at AS Roma from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, with the Italians having an option to make the deal permanent in the summer. However, injuries and inconsistencies have prevented the Iranian forward from making his desired impact.

This season, he has made 21 appearances for Roma, scoring two goals and assisting two goals. Of Roma’s 29 Serie A games so far, Azmoun has been in the squad for 22 of those and has been subbed in 15 times. Now with the business end of the season approaching, he is set to miss out for at least a month with what seems to be a serious muscle tear.

AS Roma’s season so far

Following their 1-0 win against Sassuolo in their last Serie A game, AS Roma have now created some breathing space between themselves and Atalanta in 6th place with 45 points. They are also within touching distance of Bologna above them as a win would bring the two level on points.

Roma have recorded 15 wins, six draws and eight defeats in their 29 games so far, earning 51 points. They have scored 55 goals and conceded 35, resulting in a goal difference of +20.

Daniele De Rossi has overseen the club’s overhaul following Jose Mourinho’s departure. In fact, Roma are doing so well that they have lost just once in their last nine games. That too was a meaningless result as Roma lost to Brighton 1-0 in the second leg of the Europa League, having won the first leg 4-0.

De Rossi’s men will return to action against Lecce on April 1.
