Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal talks Messi comparisons

Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal has vowed to leave a legacy and explains how comparisons to Lionel Messi don’t bother him. Following his excellent 2023/24 campaign with the Catalan giants, Yamal was one of the most talked about players in the Euro 2024 this summer.

He was key to Spain’s triumph in the Euro 2024 and became the youngest player to ever win the European Championship. Having made his professional debut at the age of 15, Yamal has an entire career ahead of him and was one of the best players for Barcelona last season.

The La Masia graduate who became the youngest-ever player to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or has occasionally been compared with Lionel Messi who was not nominated for the Ballon d’Or for the first time since 2003.

How did Lamine Yamal react to Lionel Messi comparisons?

Teenager Lamine Yamal who is now a superstar in his own right has been included in the 30-man list for the 2024 Ballon d’Or. He enjoyed a sensational summer campaign with Spain and is widely considered to be Messi’s successor in years to come.

But Yamal has not shied away from the discussion and explains that the comparisons doesn’t really affect his game.

“For me the most important thing is to leave a legacy, to have your career. In the end, being compared to Leo is more important than not looking at it,” he said.

“It is true that if you are compared to the best player in history it is because you are doing things well. It doesn’t bother me, obviously, but I try to always be myself.”
