Brentford vs Chelsea Preview

As matchday 27 rolls out, Brentford vs Chelsea will kick off on Saturday afternoon as both squads look to bounce back from recent defeats. The home side, Brentford, have been in free fall in the Premier League standings since the turn of the year. Since January, the Bees have won only two matches in the league.

The club was comfortably positioned in the middle of the table for the majority of the season but now finds itself in 16th place. Brentford now are only 5 points above the drop zone. With Everton picking up crucial points, and Luton Town and Forest looking to escape the relegation zone, Brentford need to find form or they could be headed to an unceremonious exit from the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Chelsea comes into the game in a much stronger position in the table, but in a similar form. The Blues were handed a shock 1-0 defeat in the Carabao Cup final by an inexperienced Liverpool on the weekend. Even before the final, Chelsea had only won one of their previous 5 Premier League outings. The dip in form will be concerning to the club as they battle Leeds midweek in the FA Cup before traveling to Brentford. While on paper both matches look winnable for the billion-pound squad, their recent injuries and inconsistency could result in surprises.

The Bees suffered a 4-2 thrashing at the hands of West Ham on matchday 26. The defeat perfectly highlighted the defensive issues the squad is currently facing owing to injuries. Jamaican center-back Ethan Pinnock had led the Brentford backline effectively this campaign until his ankle injury in mid-February. Now, the 30-year-old seems to be until at least late March. Without his leadership at the back, the squad has suffered from a lack of communication. His partner in crime in defense, Ben Mee, also sustained a painful ankle injury on 26th February, and now seems unlikely to return for the game against Chelsea. With their two main center backs injured, the squad is bound to suffer against a ruthless attack.

Apart from their center backs, Brentford will also miss the services of Rico Henry and Joshua Dasilva who have been ruled out until the end of the season. Aaron Hickey sustained a hamstring injury back in November and is still recovering. The Bees will also be without Bryan Mbeumo who has been crucial to their attack this campaign.

The Blues have an injury list longer than fit first-team players. Christopher Nkunku is the latest victim to be sidelined after he picked up an injury against Liverpool in the final. The Frenchman has barely played all season as he has been plagued with injuries ever since his arrival. He is now set to miss at least a month of football. Chelsea will also be without the services of Wesley Fofana and Lesley Ugochukwu who are still nursing their long-term injuries.

However, there is some positive news for Mauricio Pochettino’s men. Thiago Silva was spotted back in training and is likely to be back for the tie in Brentford. Romeo Lavia will also return to the squad but is unlikely to start soon. Defender Benoit Badiashile and left-back Marc Cucurella are also recovering well and will soon return to the first-team fold.

Since 1935, the two sides have met 20 times. Despite being the weaker side, Brentford has still managed to win an impressive 7 times against Chelsea. Meanwhile, the Blues have won 10 of the ties, with 3 games ending in a draw. In their latest encounter, Chelsea were stunned by Brentford as they won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. In fact, the Blues have managed to win only one of the last five battles against the Bees. Talk about an underdog story!

However, with Chelsea seeking vengeance, Brentford vs Chelsea is bound to be a cracker at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Brentford vs Chelsea Prediction:

Both the squads have enjoyed phases of good football this campaign, but they enter the game in awful form. Chelsea will be delighted with the return of some key players to the squad and should have enough firepower to win the game. However, the Bees boast an impressive record against Chelsea recently. Brentford will like their chances of causing another upset for Chelsea in what has been an abysmal season. However, on paper Chelsea looks much stronger and should convert that onto the pitch and win.

Predicted Score: Brentford 1-2 Chelsea
