With Chelsea sitting in 11th place a few days before New Year, few expected the Blues to finish in a European spot despite the fact that they had half the season left. But the London side produced an incredible and shocking run of form that stunned fans and critics alike. So much so, that Chelsea lost just three games in the Premier League after the turn of the year, with losses to Wolves, Liverpool and Arsenal.
That combined with a five game and nine game unbeaten run either side of their 5-0 loss to Arsenal in Gameweek 29 ensured that the Blues leapt over Manchester United into the top seven. However, Newcastle United’s struggles towards the end allowed Chelsea to take advantage and the Blues eventually finished in sixth place, ensuring a Europa League place for next term.
But despite that, Mauricio Pochettino left the club by mutual consent, in a decision announced a few days after the season was over.
Chelsea set 51 goal Premier League record; most with players under age of 23
That decision shocked fans and critics alike as Pochettino was being praised for leading the club back into the top side and into Europe again. Not only that, fans criticized Todd Bohely’s board and their decision-making skills especially as Pochettino had just managed to get the best out of the squad. So much so, that the Blues set an unusual record at the end of the season.
As per the Sun, Chelsea scored 51 goals Premier League with players under the age of 23 in the league season which is the most any team has managed. Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson dominate the list as the duo played a key role in the club’s success alongside Noni Madueke, Mykhailo Mudryk and a few others. However, Palmer dominated the tally with 22 goals and is in consideration to win the PFA player of the year.
