Chelsea Kyle Walker-Peters

Chelsea tipped to sign former Tottenham Hotspur defender

According to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, Chelsea could look to sign former Tottenham Hotspur fullback Kyle Walker-Peters this January.

The Blues have struggled massively this season and one area of concern has been fullback. Skipper and right-back Reece James has made just nine appearances across competitions this season due to his recurring injury issues. Meanwhile, vice-captain and left-back Ben Chilwell has also struggled with injuries, making just eight appearances.

Hence, Chelsea could drop in the market to sign a new fullback this January. Walker-Peters, who’s also been linked with West Ham United, has been tipped for a move to Stamford Bridge this month.

Alex Crook told Give Me Sport:

“When it comes to Walker-Peters, there is no sign of him signing a new contract. I think they thought there would be more Premier League interest than there was in the summer. They didn’t get a single bid.

“I mentioned West Ham being interested a few weeks ago because they are definitely looking for right-back cover.

“Even Chelsea could come into it, with Reece James’ injury problems. He can play at right and left-back, which would be ideal with Ben Chilwell spending time on the sidelines. It wouldn’t surprise me if somebody tries to get Walker-Peters before the end of the window.”

Walker-Peters came through Chelsea rivals Tottenham Hotspur’s academy before making his debut in 2017. He made 24 senior appearances for them before joining Southampton on loan in January 2020 before the move was made permanent in the summer of that year.

The Englishman has made 147 appearances for the Saints across competitions. His contract with the club expires in the summer of 2025 and Southampton could look for around £20 million for him this month.

West Ham United are also interested in signing Walker-Peters so it could come down to a bidding war between the two London clubs.

The 26-year-old has, incidentally, played under now-Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino during their time together at Spurs. He made 23 appearances under the Argentine, registering one goal and three assists.
