Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana speaks out about his teammate Enzo Fernandez after the Copa America winner was criticised for ‘uninhibited racism’ by the French defender.
Fernandez was accused after the midfielder was seen signing a derogatory song about France’s black players while celebrating Argentina’s Copa America victory and posted a video on his social media account.
How has Wesley Fofana reacted to the video?
The French defender took aim at “uninhibited racism” in a social media post but he has removed that post from his account. Chelsea launched an investigation following the drama and the Argentinian midfielder soon apologised to his teammates and pledged to contribute to an anti-discrimination charity.
Both Fofana and Fernandez are part of Chelsea’s pre-season tour in the United States and the former has addressed Fernandez’s apology in a pre-match press conference.
“You see Enzo is back and I’m happy,” Fofana said. “We talked together. I explained why I did not like the video he posted. He explained. He said sorry because he did not want to hurt French fans or anyone. He did not understand when singing it.
“If I’m on one side and Enzo is on the other side and we fight every day or we don’t talk or we’re not happy, on the pitch then we don’t play well,” the former Leicester City defender added. “That’s not only me and Enzo. It’s all the team. It is for that, that we talked. It’s a good club.”
