“We are all in this” – Chelsea players ready to “fight” for Mauricio Pochettino

The pressure is mounting for Mauricio Pochettino in the Chelsea managerial job. The Blues just lost the League Cup final to Liverpool, extending the club’s record of consecutive final losses to six in a row.

Amidst the mounting pressure on the gaffer, Chelsea midfielder Trevoh Chalobah ensures that Pochettino is fully backed by all of his players. Speaking to the media in the FA Cup post-match interview after beating Leeds United, the Cobham graduate said that the players still trust Poch.

“He is a brilliant manager who will always protect us,” he said to the Standard. “We are always going to fight for him. We will always fight for the manager, and we showed that today.”

Losing to Liverpool in the dying minutes of extra time was like a ‘stab in the heart,’ said Chalobah. But he admitted that the result made Chelsea even stronger and more united.

“It was a moment to bring us all together, to sit down and know we are all in this together. It’s not an individual thing with the manager in one corner [and us in the other],” he added. “We just try to focus on what’s within the camp and what’s between us.

“We are all human beings, and it can affect us somehow, and it did. But as footballers, we’ve got to bounce back, and we did. We have the opportunity to make things right, and we did that today.”

Chelsea spent a staggering £434.5m on recruiting new players this season. Two of the most expensive signings were Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo. But both newcomers have been struggling to cement their place in The Blues’ first-choice squad.

Chalobah himself just had his first start for Chelsea this season. The Sierra Leone-born youngster has been dealing with injuries that disrupted his performance this season. Despite not having an ideal season, Chalobah has been linked to a move at the end of the season. However, he chooses not to be distracted and keeps his focus on the team instead.

“With all the noise going on around me, I just try to stay focused on being at the club and how much I love the club. I will fight, no matter what, whether I play or I don’t play,” he said.
