Preview
Chile vs Argentina will take place at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on June 26 as the Round 2 of Group A games in Copa America 2024 is set to get underway.
La Roja are all set to enter this contest on the back of a goalless draw against Peru in their opening match of the tournament. They had an average possession of 65% throughout the game and also attempted 11 shots with just one of those on target as they severely lacked accuracy. Their forwards had a dull outing, with Diego Valdes also picking up an injury, as the only bright spark from the game was goalkeeper-captain Claudio Bravo.
La Albiceleste, on the other hand, kicked-off this edition of the Copa America in style with a comfortable 2-0 win against Canada. Both teams played a rather tame first half, with Argentina failing to breach their opponents’ defensive lines. However, they scored their first goal just four minutes into the second half and were unlucky to only win 2-0 in the end. They will look to continue this run in the next game.
With that said, let’s take a look at the team news coming out of both camps.
Chile vs Argentina Team News
Chile
Manager Ricardo Gareca had his full-strength squad fit and available for the last game and he deployed his strongest XI. However, Valdes picked up a knock and could miss the next one.
Skipper Claudio Bravo will retain his spot between the sticks, with Mauricio Isla and Paulo Diaz in defence ahead of him. Marcelino Nunez and Erick Pulgar will man the midfield, with Dario Osorio and Victor Davilla playing out wide. Eduardo Vargas will lead the line for Chile as the lone striker.
Argentina
Manager Lionel Scaloni deployed his strongest XI in the last game as Argentina were unlucky to walk away with only a 2-0 win.
Emiliano Martinez remains the number one goalkeeper, with Cristian Romero and Nahuel Molina in defence ahead of him. Rodrigo de Paul and Leandro Paredes will man central midfield, with Angel Di Maria playing out wide. Skipper Lionel Messi will play up top alongside Julian Alvarez.

Key Players to Watch
- Alexis Sanchez (Chile) – Burdened with the weight of being his nation’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals from 164 appearances, Sanchez will have his eyes set on possibly bagging the first goal for Chile at Copa America 2024. He attempted three shots in the goalless draw against Peru but they were all off-target as he will look to put in a better performance in the next game.
- Julian Alvarez (Argentina) – Alvarez scored La Albiceleste’s opening goal of the tournament following an assist from Mac Allister. He had a great game overall as he attempted two other shots, with one of them on target. He also completed one dribble and passed the ball with 100% accuracy.
Chile vs Argentina Head-to-Head Record
These two teams have come across one another several times in the last few years. They also notably met in the finals of the 2015 and 2016 editions of the Copa America, both of which were won by Chile. However, Argentina has had the upper hand in recent times, winning two of their last five, with the other three ending in draws.
Last 5 Games
- Chile 1-2 Argentina [01/22]
- Argentina 1-1 Chile [06/21]
- Argentina 1-1 Chile [06/21]
- Argentina 0-0 Chile [09/19]
- Argentina 2-1 Chile [07/19]
Prediction
Going by recent history, Argentina have the upper hand, and if form is brought into consideration they are outright favourites to win this. With a solid defence and a potent attack put together, La Albiceleste are a team that could make any opponent sweat, let alone Chile. They should win this game with ease.
Prediction: Chile 0-3 Argentina.
