Colombian pop star Shakira has announced her new song ‘Punteria’ as the official anthem of the upcoming Copa America 2024. The tournament, set to be held in the United States, kicks off on 20 June with defending champions Argentina taking on Canada.
A singing sensation with millions of fans around the world, Shakira has created amazing renditions for a few major international football competitions before, with her song ‘Waka waka’ for the 2010 FIFA World Cup being the most popular.
On her official YouTube page, the song has garnered almost four billion views, whereas her song ‘La La La’ for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil has another 1.3 billion views. This is perhaps her first time signing for Copa America.
Named ‘Punteria’, which is Spanish for ‘aim’, is a part of Shakira’s new album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, and was premiered on YouTube on 22 March this year. The video has gained 31 million views so far and features Cardi B too.

Although there’s no talk of Lionel Messi retiring from international football, Copa America 2024 could well be his last tournament with Argentina’s national team. He will turn 37 just days after the event kicks off, and having achieved everything in his phenomenal career, there’s nothing more left for him to pursue.
