Enzo Fernandez selected in Argentina’s preliminary squad for the upcoming Copa America

Enzo Fernandez has been selected in Argentina’s preliminary squad for the 2024 Copa America. There were doubts among the Country’s fan base regarding his availability for the prestigious competition caused by his long-with standing surgery on his sports hernia.

He took part in the first-team training of Chelsea in the last few matches of the Premier League 2023-2024 season. Maybe he was looking for a place in Argentina’s squad. As it turns out he is a part of their plans for Copa America. Now the only question remains is that whether he is fit enough to play for them from the initial stages of the tournament itself.

The Blues had options in the form of Alexis Mac Allister and Angel Di Maria in the midfield department. They don’t need to rush Enzo into their starting lineup. But, there is still about a month to go before the start of the Copa America 2024 and the 23-year-old Chelsea midfielder might be back to full fitness till then.

Also, as the tournament will be played for a decent period considering each team plays a notable number of matches, Enzo Fernandez might be among the thick of things for La Albiceleste and play a decent chunk of minutes. Before being sidelined due to injury woes from Chelsea’s playing eleven during the latter half of the recent Premier League season, the Argentine put up some decent performances for them in the midfield area.

Although he was still growing as a player under Mauricio Pochettino as the London-based club went through a rebuilding phase, Enzo’s technical ability on the ball was quite ominous to the naked eye. He does provide Chelsea with a touch of dynamism in the middle of the park. His skills permitted them to play a more attacking and fluid style of football.

In 28 matches for Chelsea in the 2023–2024 Premier League season, Enzo Fernandez scored three goals and bagged two assists. He made his debut on the international stage for Argentina in September 2022. In his 21 caps for La Albiceleste at the highest level so far, apart from his contributions in the midfield, he has also managed to get a respectable tally of four goals for them.
