The Argentinian midfielder has undergone a successful groin surgery and was expected to begin his rehabilitation, sideling the 23-year-old for the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign.
Why did Enzo Fernandez require a groin injury?
Enzo Fernandez reportedly had an inguinal hernia, a condition that affects the area between the thigh and groin. The midfielder has been battling the pain for more than a month and will miss the last six Premier League matches for Chelsea.
The 2022 World Cup winner who was signed from Benfica for £107 million has made 28 league appearances this term, scoring three goals. He’s expected to miss three weeks of action before making his comeback in time for the Copa America which begins on June 20th.
“I wanted to let you know that my operation was successful and everything went well, thank God,” Fernandez wrote on Instagram. “I needed to get this surgery because I was dragging the pain on for about six months. It was something I could avoid while constantly treating myself with injections and medications.
“But a few weeks ago the pain started to get more and more intense, without any of this taking effect, and it was worse as I trained and played, annoyingly, but I didn’t want to stop being part of the games.”
Enzo Fernandez Injury: When will he return to action?
His recent groin surgery has effectively ruled him out for the remainder of the season and is expected to be called into action with Argentina later this summer at the Copa America ahead of Chelsea’s pre-season tour in the United States.
Argentina will be aiming to secure back-to-back Copa America titles having won the most recent edition of the tournament in 2021.
Fernandez was spotted at Chelsea’s training facility at Cobham ahead of Tottenham’s visit to Stamford Bridge on Thursday.
