The Euro 2024 qualification scenarios are heating up as the tournament enters its final matchweek of the group stage. The tournament has been a rollercoaster ride with 24 teams competing fiercely for a spot in the Round of 16.
The top 2 teams from each group along with 4 best third-place teams will qualify for the next round i.e. round of 16.
While Germany, Switzerland, Spain, and Portugal have already secured their places in the knockout stages the remaining slots are still up for grabs.
Sportsdunia brings you a breakdown of Euro 2024 qualification scenarios from the group stage.
Group A: Germany, Switzerland, Scotland, Hungary
Germany’s early victories against Scotland and Hungary secured their place in the next round. Switzerland’s draw against Germany means they finish second in Group A with five points. Germany tops the group with seven points.
Scotland aimed to make history by reaching the knockouts for the first time but fell short against Hungary in a dramatic final game. Dominik Szoboszlai’s Hungary clinched their win with a late goal leaving Scotland third with three points. Hungary’s goal difference of minus three complicates their chances of advancing as they now depend on other results.
Group B: Spain vs Albania, Italy vs Croatia
Spain has qualified, easing into the next round from the so-called ‘Group of Death.’ Italy needs at least a draw to advance, while Croatia and Albania must win to ensure their progression.
Group C: England vs Slovenia, Serbia vs Denmark
England needs to avoid defeat against Slovenia to move forward. A win secures them the top spot in Group C. Denmark and Slovenia will advance if they win their matches. Serbia can finish in the top two if they beat Denmark and England overcomes Slovenia.
Group D: Netherlands vs Austria, France vs Poland
Poland is already out after losing their first two matches. The Netherlands and France, both with four points, need only to avoid defeat to secure their spots in the knockouts. Austria, with three points, must beat the Netherlands to guarantee their place.
Group E: Ukraine vs Belgium, Slovakia vs Romania
This group is uniquely poised, with all four teams tied on points. A win will send any team through. A draw will benefit Belgium and Romania due to their superior goal differences, with Slovakia potentially advancing as a top third-placed team. Ukraine would be eliminated in such a scenario.
Group F: Portugal vs Georgia, Czech Republic vs Turkey
Portugal is already through and will top the group if they avoid defeat against Georgia. Both Czechia and Georgia need victories to have a chance of finishing in the top two. Georgia also requires a Czech Republic win over Turkey to help their cause.
Top Third-Placed Teams
Currently, Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Hungary are the best third-placed teams, giving them a strong chance to advance. The final matchweek will determine if they can maintain these positions or if other teams will edge them out.
As the final matchweek approaches, the stakes are incredibly high. Teams will be fighting tooth and nail to secure their spots in the knockout stages, promising fans a thrilling end to the group stages. Stay tuned for all the action as the road to the Round of 16 concludes!
