Euro 2024: Guaranteed Players in Expanded Italy Squad for Soccer Tournament in Germany

Expanded Italy Squad For Euro 2024

Following a huge decision taken by the UEFA regarding the extension of players’ numbers in the team squad, Italian national football team coach Luciano Spalletti can now call up 26 players for the upcoming Euro 2024. After a series of discussions, the governing body of European football (UEFA) has decided to allow teams to select squads of 23 to 26 footballers.

Previously, the squad size was limited to 23 players. This decision means that 15 players can also sit on the bench, eliminating the need for anyone to sit in the stands during the upcoming Euro tournament. The tournament is scheduled to begin on June 14, with the final set for July 14.

This extension brings a sense of relief to the Italian camp as they prepare to defend their title in Euro 2024, starting with their campaign in Germany next month. The final date for squad announcements for the tournament is June 7, and it is expected that all teams will benefit from UEFA’s new guidelines. Italy finds themselves in the same group as Croatia, Spain, and Albania.

Prior to the squad expansion announcement, Italian media reports indicated that there were nearly 13 players already guaranteed a spot in Italy’s squad for the upcoming Euro tournament in Germany. According to these reports, Coach Spalletti has already determined his top 13 players for the squad.

13 Guaranteed Players:

  1. Alessandro Bastoni
  2. Gianluigi Donnarumma
  3. Federico Dimarco
  4. Guglielmo Vicario
  5. Giovanni Di Lorenzo
  6. Matteo Darmian
  7. Giorgio Scalvini
  8. Nicolo Barella
  9. Federico Chiesa
  10. Bryan Cristante
  11. Lorenzo Pellegrini

The three top players who have not secured guaranteed spots in the Italian squad are Gianluca Scamacca, Riccardo Orsolini, and Gianluca Mancini. Despite Scamacca’s current red-hot form, it will be challenging for him to break into Spalletti’s starting XI. However, all three players could still feature as substitutes, given their impressive performances this season.
