Lionel Messi is a Taylor Swift fan?
Inter Miami star Lionel Messi has apparently unfollowed Taylor Swift’s ex-flame Joe Alwyn following the release of her new album, The Tortured Poets Department. Some eagle-eyed fans noticed this and shared the news on X, formerly Twitter, and rumors soon spread that Messi could be a ‘Swiftie’, a term given to the popstar’s fans.
In her latest album, Swift appears to have opened up on her past relationship with Alwyn, hinting at betrayal and heartbreak during the six years they were together for. She writes in the lyrics of ‘Down Bad’: “Did you take all my old clothes just to leave me here naked and alone / In a field in my same old town that somehow seems so hollow now / How dare you think it’s romantic / Leaving me safe and stranded.”
Also, in the “Smallest Man Who Ever Lived”, the lyrics go: “And you’ll confess why you did it / And I’ll say good riddance / Cos it wasn’t sexy once it wasn’t forbidden / You didn’t measure up in any measure of a man / I would have died for your sins but instead I just died inside / You deserve prison, but you won’t get time / You will slide into inboxes and slip through the bars.“
This is perceived as Swift dedicating those lines to the troubles moments she endured with Alwyn, and this has caused quite a stir among the celebrities too. After Ryan Reynolds and his wife Blake Lively unfollowed Alwyn, Messi has followed suit.
A Swift fan wrote on X:
“After the release of THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT, Lionel Messi has unfollowed Joe Alwyn on Instagram.”
The post has since garnered over 36,000 likes on X and over 120 comments.
Messi returns to action on Sunday
Inter Miami take on Nashville in the MLS on Sunday and Lionel Messi is set to feature for the Herons. He missed a few games last month due to injury, but returned at the start of April. Since then, he has scored twice more and bagged one assist too, taking his tally for the league season to five goals and two assists. It’s a fine start for the Argentine, and his good form also holds Argentina in good stead ahead of the 2024 Copa America, which begins in June.
