It is now an open secret that FC Barcelona are willing to sell their 27-year-old midfielder Frenkie de Jong. Now, several reports claim that a move is being initiated for the permanent departure of the Dutch star out of Barcelona.
As per Football Transfers, FC Barcelona are ready to pay all dues they owe to Frenkie de Jong, which accounts for 18 million Euros in deferred wages (accumulated over several seasons). However, the Spanish giants are ready to proceed with the full payments only if Frenkie de Jong agrees to a permanent transfer out of the club next summer.
Why FC Barcelona are willing to sell Frenkie de Jong?
FC Barcelona are struggling with severe financial strain for the past few seasons. Situations had been so bad that they had to depart several of their key players, including club legends out of the club to abide by La Liga’s Financial Fairplay Rules (FFP). Many players had to take a wage cut or defer their payments to the club stable.
Frenkie de Jong, a big money signing from Ajax in 2019 also had to defer his payments. FC Barcelona had huge expectations from the prospect since his arrival. He fared well and played 213 games for the club, but his career at Barca has been distorted by injuries.
Now, even without this key midfielder, Barca are faring well. The side is at the top spot of La Liga, with the use of young La Masia kids like Marc Bernal and Marc Casado. It is being speculated that De Jong is no longer in the plans, with youngsters of high-calibre already replacing him, at wages which are negligible when compared.
Frenkie de Jong’s next destination
It has often been reported in the past that Frenkie de Jong has been reluctant to move out of FC Barcelona. But, now being out of all plans, the Dutchman should opt for a move out. As per Fichajes – Spain, English Premier League giants Manchester City are interested in him. And with star midfielder Rodri injured, he is expected to be a “key target”.
A move to Manchester City would be ideal for Frenkie de Jong. His playing style is one that Pep Guardiola thrives on. Also, moving out of a big club like FC Barcelona, Man City would provide him with a similar stature. His high wages would also be easily met by the club.
