Barcelona Faces Financial Constraints, Sporting Director Deco Confirms No January Signings

The sporting director of Barcelona, Deco, has delivered a disheartening update on the club’s financial predicament, revealing that the Blaugrana will be unable to make any new signings in the January transfer window due to financial fair play (FFP) rules.

The iconic midfielder acknowledged the stringent scrutiny under FFP rules whenever the club attempts to secure new deals or signings. Reportedly, only three players are deemed untouchable in the current squad, making other members potentially available for transfer if the right offer surfaces.

Barcelona’s financial woes have been further exacerbated by the non-payment of debts, prompting the club to seek new investors to alleviate the situation and facilitate January signings. However, as of now, these efforts have not materialized.

While the club managed to secure the loan signing of Vitor Roque in January, utilizing 80% of Gavi’s salary, additional signings are not anticipated during the winter transfer window. Roque, initially part of a €60 million deal with Athletico Paranense scheduled for the summer of 2024, provides a temporary solution for Barcelona.

Despite recent setbacks, including a resounding 4-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Supercopa de Espana final, Deco expressed unwavering confidence in manager Xavi.

He affirmed that Xavi’s position is secure, even as Barcelona contends with challenges in defending their La Liga title, currently sitting in fourth place, eight points behind leaders Girona with a game in hand. Barcelona FC have accumulated 41 points from 19 games in the league this season so far.
