Gambia vs Cameroon: Preview, Prediction and Odds

Gambia vs Cameroon Match Preview

  • Tournament – AFCON
  • Date – Tuesday, January 23
  • Kick-off Time – 10:30 pm IST
  • Venue – Peace of Bouake Stadium

Gambia will face Cameroon in a crucial group-stage clash in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 on Tuesday.

Both sides are on the verge of elimination from the competition after failing to win any of their first games. Gambia lost 3-0 against Senegal in their opening game before going down 1-0 against Guinea in their second game.

Meanwhile, Cameroon played out a 1-1 draw against Guinea before losing 3-1 to Senegal in their last game.

A win on Tuesday could give either side an outside chance of qualifying for the Round of 16 of the competition. However, a draw or a defeat would likely spell elimination.

Gambia are ranked 126 in FIFA World Rankings while Cameroon are ranked 46. A group-stage elimination for the latter would be a big shock and they will look to do their best to avoid it.

Team News

Gambia will have their entire squad available to them for the clash against Cameroon on Tuesday.

Cameroon, meanwhile, will be without Vincent Aboubakar due to his hamstring injury. Goalkeeper Andre Onana returned to their starting lineup against Senegal after joining the squad but had a forgettable match as they lost 3-1.

Head-to-Head

The two sides have faced off just three times previously and Cameroon have won all three. All of their previous clashes have come at the AFCON itself.

Last five results:

  • Gambia 0-2 Cameroon – AFCON – January 29, 2022
  • Cameroon 2-0 Gambia – AFCON – September 3, 2016
  • Gambia 0-1 Cameroon – AFCON – September 6, 2015

Prediction

Both sides are in desperate need of points to stand any chance of qualifying for the Round of 16 of AFCON 2023. Hence, they would certainly go for it which could arguably allow Cameroon more space to work in.

Gambia have lost their last four games across competitions while Cameroon are also without a win in their last four games across competitions. However, Cameroon’s quality and urgency should be able to see them get past Gambia on Tuesday.

Predicted Score: Gambia 0-3 Cameroon

Gambia vs Cameroon Players to Watch Out For

Gambia

For Gambia, the key played would be defender Omar Colley. The defender has been one of the bright sparks in their otherwise dismal campaign at AFCON 2023. Colley was brilliant in their 1-0 defeat against Guinea but unfortunately, couldn’t prevent Gambia from losing 1-0.

The 31-year-old centre-back has made 47 overall appearances for Gambia and his experience will be key as they look to stop Cameroon’s attack on Tuesday.

Colley is also a threat on set pieces, having scored six goals in 30 games for his club side Besiktas.

Cameroon

For Cameroon, the key player would be Georges-Kevin N’Koudou. The tricky winger could be important for his side as they look to break down Gambia on Tuesday.

N’Koudou has already provided an assist at the AFCON 2023, setting up Frank Magri to score the equaliser in their 1-1 draw against Guinea. The Damac FC winger likes to take on his man and create chances which will be key for Cameroon.

N’Koudou has experience as well, having played for the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Olympique Marseille in the past.
