BREAKING: Gareth Southgate steps down as England manager after Euro 2024 final defeat

England manager Gareth Southgate has announced he has stepped down from his role following England’s unfortunate defeat to Spain in the UEFA Euro 2024 final. The 53-year-old has been in England’s hot seat for the past eight years and guided the nation to two successive European finals.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howie and former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel are on the FA’s top wishlists who could succeed Southgate following his departure.

How has Gareth Southgate reacted to his departure?

The 53-year-old manager led his country for 102 games in the last eight years and is the only manager to lead England into two major tournament finals. His contract with the FA was due to expire in December this year.

But pressure mounted on him following England’s disappointing spell at the Euros this summer despite reaching the finals. Gareth Southgate confirmed his departure in an emotional statement.

“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.

“But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.

“I joined the FA in 2011, determined to improve English football. In that time, including eight years as England men’s manager, I have been supported by some brilliant people who have my heartfelt thanks.

“I look forward to watching and celebrating as the players go on to create more special memories and to connect and inspire the nation as we know they can.

“Thank you, England – for everything.”
