Georges Mikautadze scores Georgia’s first goal in a major international tournament

He now has six goals in his last six games…

Georgian striker Georges Mikautadze has scored the nation’s first-ever goal in a major international tournament with his strike against Turkey in Group F of the UEFA Euro 2024. The 23-year-old was on target in the 32nd minute to bring the Crusaders level into the tie after Mert Müldür had put the Crescent-Stars in front.

Just seven minutes after falling behind in the tie, Georgia expertly clawed their way into it following some wonderful teamwork down the right. It resulted in Giorgi Kochorashvili laying it off for Mikautadze, who was unmarked inside the box, and the Metz hitman made no mistake, volleying it under goalkeeper Mert Günok for 1-1.

As a result, he became the first scorer for Georgia in a major international competition and has now bagged six goals for the side in his last six games. This includes a stunning four-goal salvo against Thailand in an 8-0 blitz last October. Before entering the tournament, he also found the net against Montenegro in a warmup game.

Georgia giving Turkey a serious run for their money

Despite only making their debut, Georgia are giving Turkey a serious run for their money in their clash right now, as it’s tied at 1-1 at the time of writing. The Crescent-Stars threatened to run away with the game midway through the opening stanza by netting twice in two minutes, but their second goal was ruled out for offside. Just moments later, the Crusaders restored parity with excellent team play. All this has made up for an exhilarating match between the minnows, which was rather billed as the least exciting game of the tournament so far.
