Guinea vs Ethiopia Preview

Tournament: Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers

Date: Saturday, October 12, 2024

Time: 4 pm GMT

Venue: Alassane Outtara Ebimpe Olympic Stadium, Guinea

Guinea will host Ethiopia in a Group H clash in the Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers on Saturday. It’s a crucial clash for both teams as they struggled to make an impact in the first two matches last month.

Guinea lost 1-0 against DR Congo away from home in their first match of the qualifiers before losing 2-1 against Tanzania at home. They sit at the bottom of Group H with zero points after two games.

Ethiopia, meanwhile, sits one point above Guinea with one point. They lost 2-0 at home against DR Congo in their opening game before playing out a goalless draw against Tanzania in their second match.

Both sides desperately need points to stay in the race for qualification to the next round. While DR Congo and Tanzania appear favorites to qualify from Group H, a win for Guinea or Ethiopia on Saturday could make things interesting. Hence, it’s an important match for both sides.

Serhou Guirassy

While Serhou Guirassy is now 28 years old, his major breakthrough season came in the 2023-24 campaign with VfB Stuttgart. He performed brilliantly for them, scoring 30 goals and providing three assists in 30 games across competitions. His exploits helped them finish second in the table above Bayern Munich and behind Bayer Leverkusen.

Guirassy’s performances earned him a move to Borussia Dortmund this summer. He’s carried on his form, scoring six goals and providing one assist in six games across competitions so far.

Hence, he will be the most important player for Guinea as they take on Ethiopia in the AFCON Qualifiers. Guirassy has scored three goals in 18 appearances for the country so far.

Canaan Markneh

Canaan Markneh will be the key player for Ethiopia in their clash against Guinea. He is their main striker and at the club level, he plays for Ethiopian side Mechal SC.

Markneh also scored the last time both sides faced off back on March 28, 2023. He scored Ethiopia’s first goal to make it 1-1 but they eventually lost 3-2. He also recently scored the winner in a 2-1 win over Lesotho in an international friendly.

Overall, Markneh has scored three goals and provided one assist in 20 games for Ethiopia so far and will look to add to his tally on Saturday against Guinea.

Guinea vs Ethiopia Prediction

Both sides have had a disappointing start to their AFCON 2025 qualification campaign. While Guinea have managed no wins so far, Ethiopia have managed one draw.

Ethiopia have lost one of their last five games across competitions, winning one and drawing the other three. However, their last competitive win came back in January 2022 when they shockingly beat Egypt 2-0. They lost 2-0 against DR Congo in their last game.

Guinea, meanwhile, have lost their last three games across competitions but won their three matches before that. Their last competitive win was a 2-1 victory over Algeria in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Guinea are ranked 82nd in the FIFA World Rankings while Ethiopia are 145th. It will be an interesting clash as both sides will face off again three days later. However, at home, Guinea are expected to continue its dominant run over Ethiopia on Saturday.

Predicted Score: Guinea 1-0 Ethiopia
