Ian Maatsen joins Borussia Dortmund on loan from Chelsea; extends contract with Blues

Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen has joined Borussia Dortmund on a six-month loan deal in the ongoing January transfer window. Before his move, however, he signed a new contract with the Blues, which will expire in the summer of 2027.

Maatsen joined Chelsea’s U18 side from PSV Eindhoven’s youth setup back in 2018. He made multiple youth appearances and made loan spells at Charlton, Coventry and Burnley.

The Dutch left-back has made 16 senior appearances for Chelsea, including 15 this season under Mauricio Pochettino. With Lewis Hall’s departure last summer and Ben Chilwell’s injury issues, Maatsen’s loan move to Dortmund is surprising.

The six-month loan deal doesn’t have any buy option in it and the Dutch defender will return to Stamford Bridge in the summer. He will wear No. 22 at Borussia Dortmund, who are hoping to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

They are fifth in the Bundesliga table, six points behind RB Leipzig in fourth. They are also set to face PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League Round of 16. Hence, Maatsen could prove to be a much-needed addition to their depth.

Dortmund have also brought back Jadon Sancho on a six-month loan from Manchester United. This deal also comes without a buy option but the German side will pay €4 million for part of his wages and loan fee.
