Former Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has penned a one-year contract extension with Arsenal as his current deal was set to expire in the summer. The 32-year-old midfielder arrived from Chelsea in January 2023 and has made 51 appearances for Mikel Arteta’s side since then.
Jorginho contract: Why did he extend his stay at Arsenal?
The Arsenal midfielder was due to be out of contract at the end of this campaign and was reportedly linked with a return to Serie A this summer. The Italian midfielder has been pivotal to Arsenal’s progress under the tutelage of Mikel Arteta over the past two seasons.
Jorginho has played an important role for the Gunners as the club attempts to win their first league title in 20 years. Earlier this year, Jorginho’s agent hinted at a return to Italy, with the midfielder enjoying spells at Verona and Napoli before joining Chelsea in July 2018.
The veteran midfielder has won the Champions League, Europa League and the European Championship and wants to win his first silverware with Arsenal this season. Arsenal did the right thing by retaining a player who has vast experience in European competitions and is a respected voice in the Arsenal dressing room.
Jorginho said: “I’m really happy to stay, because it’s a privilege to be a part of this family. There was not much to discuss to be honest, because I feel really good here.
“Just to know that they appreciate me and want me to stay longer as well, it’s a big thing for me. I feel that I have more to do, so that’s the reason why I’m staying.”
The Italian midfielder has been linked with Napoli, Juventus, Lazio and a few Saudi Pro League clubs but Jorginho decided to stay in North London and help Arsenal win trophies.
