Joshua Zirkzee shares his vision for Manchester United role

New signing Joshua Zirkzee has a unique playing style

Manchester United‘s new summer signing Joshua Zirkzee is ready to make his mark at Old Trafford. The former Bologna player who is known for his unique style, calls himself a ‘false striker.’

In an interview with The Mirror, Zirkzee explained how he plans to fit into Erik ten Hag’s system and contribute to the team. Zirkzee said:

“I occasionally drop down to midfield. I don’t do that for myself but to help the team. I am what I call a false striker. Not a number 9, not a number 10. I am a 9.5! That’s my game. Maybe I’m a little different than others. But being different is good, right?”

Zirkzee is excited to bring his flair and creativity to Manchester United.

“I want to play a pure game. Nutmegs, chops, and back heels are moments that belong in football. That style has value for me. It’s the soccer kid in me because it’s supposed to be fun too, isn’t it? You have to pick the right moments. It’s intuition. I think I have excellent skills. I spent a lot of time on that as a kid. But if I lose the ball, I want to regain it immediately with the team. But the fancy footwork is part of my game at the end of the day.”

Zirkzee joined United as their first transfer under INEOS’ control of footballing operations. Last season, he played a key role in helping Bologna qualify for the Champions League, scoring 12 goals in 37 appearances.

And now, he is set to join forces with Rasmus Hojlund in United’s attack.

Although Zirkzee missed United’s pre-season tour of the United States due to international duty at Euro 2024, he is eager to start the new season.

The Red Devils are preparing to face rivals Manchester City in the FA Community Shield on Saturday which will be followed by their Premier League opener against Fulham.
