After thriving at Leeds United especially under Marcelo Bielsa, a lot was expected from Kalvin Phillips when he signed for Manchester City. But instead, the Englishman was used more often as a substitute by Pep Guardiola and finished his debut season with just 21 appearances. Yet at the same time, the now 28-year-old lifted the treble of the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup.
The trend continued as the midfielder made only 10 appearances for the club before the January transfer window opened with Guardiola not keen on using him regularly. But with Euro 2024 on the horizon, reports indicated that Phillips wanted to leave in order to get more game-time. That opened up a loan-move to West Ham United but the 28-year-old’s problems continued.
Euro 2024: Kalvin Phillips suffers season ending calf injury
His move to the London Stadium has seen him start just thrice in the league with seven substitute appearances alongside an error leading to goal on his West Ham debut. However, a hamstring injury prior to West Ham’s Europa League clash against Bayer Leverkusen sent him out of the team. But having just recovered, the Telegraph has reported that Phillips’ season is now over and he is on his way back to City.
The report has revealed that the 28-year-old has suffered a season ending calf injury, which means that he’ll miss the Hammers’ final two games of the season. But to make matters even worse, the report has indicated that the injury could also keep him out of the England squad for the Euros. The 28-year-old was dropped during the March international break, with Kobbie Mainoo picked instead.
The Manchester United starlet thrived as the defensive midfielder in Gareth Southgate’s lineups during the break and it had many clamouring for him to be picked for the Euros as well. That might well happen as the starlet has continued to play well for the Red Devils since then. Furthermore, Phillips’ last of his 31 caps for the Three Lions was in November 2023, in substitute appearance against North Macedonia.
