In a tense Euro 2024 opener France secured a narrow 1-0 win against Austria. However, the victory was overshadowed by a potential injury to star player Kylian Mbappe who appeared to suffer a broken nose in a nasty collision.
How Mbappe Suffered the Injury?
Late in the match, with France clinging to their 1-0 lead Mbappe went up for a header but collided with Austrian defender Kevin Danso.
The impact left Mbappe clutching his face with blood streaming from his nose. Medical staff rushed to his aid but their efforts to stop the bleeding were in vain. Mbappe’s nose looked visibly out of shape as he was treated on the field.
Earlier in the game Mbappe had been crucial in creating the chance that led to Austria’s own goal. He sped past Philipp Mwene and sent a dangerous cross into the box which Maximilian Wober inadvertently headed into his own net.
Mbappe also missed a golden opportunity to score when he found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper but failed to convert.
What’s Next for Mbappe?
France’s hopes in Euro 2024 may be jeopardized if Kylian Mbappe injury is severe. The French squad is deep with talent but losing Mbappe will significantly reduce their chances of securing the title.
The incident also led to some confusion when Mbappe (after receiving treatment) re-entered the field without the referee’s permission. This action earned him a yellow card adding to the drama.
France now faces crucial group matches against the Netherlands and Poland. The team’s management and fans first believed that Mbappe’s could continue to play possibly with a protective mask. However, a recent update suggested that Mbappe will not be taking part in France next match which is set to take place against the Netherlands.
He will wear a mask for the rest of the competition, the healing of his injury and the sporting stakes will dictate a potential return against Poland
