During the Peru vs. Canada game in Copa America 2024, a concerning moment captured the attention of all fans, including the football players on the pitch. Humberto Panjoj, the linesman or assistant referee of the game, collapsed on the field due to intense sunlight (Heat Stroke).
The incident occurred in the first half, prompting goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau to quickly come to his assistance and signal for medical help upon realizing the seriousness of the situation. The play was stopped for some time.
According to a report from The Athletic, the temperature was 91 degrees Fahrenheit, but it felt much hotter at 101 degrees due to the high humidity of 51%.
At halftime, it was announced that medical staff were attending to the linesman. CONMEBOL, the governing body for South American football, has not yet issued a statement regarding the incident. Despite the worrying moment, there was a positive note as fans applauded when Panjoj was carefully taken off the field on a cart.
