Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp showers praise on potential successor Xabi Alonso

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp recently spoke highly of current Bayer Leverkusen manager and Liverpool’s next manager Xabi Alonso in an interview. The Spaniard has enjoyed great success with his club so far since taking over.

Klopp has been in awe of Alonso’s methods and tactics and also praised his recruitment strategies and execution. Xabi Alonso took over when Leverkusen were in a spot of bother and hovering around the relegation zone. A year and few months later, they are five points clear of Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga, having defeated them 3-0 last weekend.

Seeing the turnaround that Alonso has managed, Jurgen Klopp gave the former Liverpool midfielder his flowers.

“Xabi is doing a great job.

“If you would have asked me eight weeks ago about Xabi Alonso, I would have gone ‘Oh my God!’

“Always what I said, the dinosaurs if you want, Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, maybe me, we will not do it – okay maybe Mourinho – but all the rest will not do it for the next 20 years.

Klopp then explained why Xabi Alonso always seemed destined to become a coach. The German manager even mentioned how the Spaniard carried himself like a coach during his playing days.

“The next generation is already there and I would say Xabi is a standout in that department… Former world-class player, from a coaching family as well which helps a little, he was like a coach already when he was playing. The football he is playing, the teams he sets up, the transfers he did, it is absolutely exceptional.”

“How quick his team is that well-tuned, for the first time it’s taken, he’s put a proper stamp on it.”

The Reds are currently top of the table in the Premier League after 24 games. They have earned 54 points so far and will look to win the title in Jurgen Klopp’s final season in-charge.
