The Reds have signed Richard Hughes as the club’s new sporting director and made the official announcement on Wednesday.
Hughes will leave his role as Bournemouth’s technical director and begin his new role at Anfield on June 1, 2024. After his retirement as a professional footballer, Hughes joined Bournemouth’s recruitment team under Eddie Howe and slowly was promoted as the club’s technical director during the club’s tenure in the Premier League.
Richard Hughes joins Liverpool
Transfer pundit Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the appointment of Richard Hughes to Liverpool FC and an official announcement can be expected soon.
He will be joining hands with Michael Edwards, former Liverpool sporting director who made his return as FSG’s chief executive of football last week. His immediate task was to appoint a sporting director and shortlist candidates for Jurgen Klopp’s successor as Liverpool manager
The Reds have been without a sporting director since the departure of Julian Ward last summer. But they are now on the brink of finalising Richard Hughes as the new sporting director who will commence his role in the new season.
The club brought in German Jord Schmadtke to assist Klopp in the summer window earlier this season, which saw some notable signings including Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch.

What will be Richard Hughes’ first task as Liverpool’s sporting director?
Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes will be greeted with the task of finding a successor to current Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp who will leave at the business end of this campaign.
