Liverpool vs Sheffield United Preview
The top of the table meets the bottom this week in the Premier League at Anfield. Liverpool FC have the opportunity to extend their lead at the top when they take on relegation battlers Sheffield United.
Both teams have a lot of injury issues coming into the game but will be looking to put that aside and get the three points on Thursday. The Reds have won their last six Premier League meetings with the Blades, scoring 13 times and conceding just once.
Liverpool have lost just once at Anfield to newly promoted Premier League sides. They have won 32 times and drawn 6 times, with their only loss coming to Fulham in March 2021.
Chris Wilder was furious with his Sheffield United players after they drew to Fulham. They were leading 3-1 until the 86th minute, went on to concede two goals in the final minutes and that saw the manager saying:
“I don’t think my team could’ve given anymore, especially in the second half where we went after the game. It was a slow start from us and was important we reached a clean sheet at half-time. We gave ourselves a foothold to get something out of the game and in the second half we grew in belief, scored a couple of goals, and thought we were on the way to a valuable three points. I’m delighted with the attitude but obviously, the result is difficult to take. Being 3-1 up, you expect your team to see the game out. The goals are poor from our point of view, with a set piece yet again.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool managed to make the most of the goalless draw between Arsenal and Manchester City. They defeated Brighton & Hove Albion and moved two points clear on top of the table.
Liverpool vs Sheffield United Team News
Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he has been handed a boost ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Sheffield United. Curtin Jones is back in training and should make the squad this week. The German manager said:
“Curtis is [in] full training. He trained already with us on Saturday, but had then extra, because the [matchday] minus one [session] does not have the intensity Curtis needed. He was with us, then he had an extra shift. He will be in full training. What does that mean exactly for the game? Let me have a look at that. Nobody else – the others, slowly but surely, but not yet.”
Joël Matip, Diogo Jota, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson, Stefan Bajcetic, and Thiago Alcântaraare ruled out for Liverpool. Andy Robertson is also back in training and could be in line to make the matchday squad.
Max Lowe, Rhys Norrington-Davies, Chris Basham, John Egan, George Baldock, Rhian Brewster, and Tom Davies are the players are out injured for Sheffield United. Cameron Archer is also a doubt for them but should be able to make the bench this week.
Liverpool vs Sheffield United Predicted Lineups
Liverpool does not have any fresh injury issues, so it would be a surprise if Jurgen Klopp makes changes to his starting XI. They should go into the game with a 4-3-3 once again with Kelleher in goal for the injured Alisson.
Bradley, Quansha, Van Dijk, and Gomez will be the backline with Mac Allister, Endo, and Szoboszlai in the midfield. Nunez will be leading the attack with Salah and Diaz on either side.
Predicted XI: Kelleher, Gomez, Van Dijk, Quansah, Bradley, Mac Allister, Endo, Szoboszlai, Díaz, Núñez, Salah
Sheffield United are also expected to go into the game with the same starting XI as the 3-3 draw with Fulham. They did drop crucial points, but Chris Wilder knows that it is his best XI and should stick with it.
They will be hoping the 3-5-2 is more like a 5-3-2, as they will need a lot of help to keep the likes of Salah and Diaz quiet.
Predicted XI: Grbic, Robinson, Ahmedhodzic, Holgate, Osborn, Hamer, Arblaster, Souza, Bogle, Brereton, McBurnie

Liverpool should come out comfortable winners and it would not be a surprise if the scoreline is closer to a tennis score. Salah missed a lot of chances against Brighton and will be looking to get more goals at his best this week and put the misses behind him.
